    Course Orientation

    15 September 2021

    Welcome to Dentistry 198!

    This is the second of three research courses that you would need to take to complete your undergraduate research requirements for the degree of Doctor of Dental Medicine.  As discussed in Dentistry 199 last semester, you are expected to be a lifelong learner; and thus must be adept with current trends and researches in the field of dentistry.  You will be expected to develop analytical skills to be able to evaluate scientific information to provide safe, effective and responsive health care to your patients.

    For this semester, you are expected to be able to produce a technically and ethically sound research proposal that you will implement with your Research Team.  The basic research knowledge that you have learned last semester and the draft research proposal that you have so far produced should be your starting point for Dentistry 198.

    At the end of this week's activities, you are expected to be able to:

    1.      recall the minimum requirements of the research courses of the Doctor of Dental Medicine program;

    2.     describe the approval process prior to the submission of the Research Proposal to the UPM REB; and

    3.   summarize updates on your Research Proposal since the end of the previous semester.

    During the Course Orientation, we will discuss how the course will be conducted and how your outputs in Dentistry 199 will transition into Dentistry 198 this semester, and to Dentistry 197 in the following semester.  Go through the Dent198 Research Proposal Format (check the Course Material folder) to refamiliarize yourself while keeping the following in mind:

      • Does my group have all the parts of the research proposal needed to be technically and ethically sound?
      • What improvements do we need to do in finalizing our group's research proposal?

    Digging Deeper…

    A copy of the Final Report of the 2018 National Survey on Oral Health (NSOH) in the Philippines is uploaded in the Course Materials folder.  Acknowledgments to the newly constituted Oral Health Division of the Department of Health for sharing the document.

    The NSOH is the most recent Philippine oral health data available from a national agency and can be used to strengthen the background and significance of your planned study.  Browse the document and wait for eureka moments on how the data can further guide you in developing your research proposal.

  • Week 1 (16-22 September 2021)

    Writing Workshop:  Preparing the Research Proposal

    22 September 2021

    At the end of Dentistry 199 in the previous semester, you were asked to prepare a DRAFT research proposal.  It may not be a complete research proposal ready for implementation (or submission for ethical approval) but you already have the basic knowledge and formatting guidelines to identify what parts of your draft research proposal needs improvement.

    At the end of this week’s activities, you are expected to:

    1.      recall the sections of a sound research proposal;

    2.      integrate the concepts of designing a research proposal in developing a significant and feasible research project; and

    3.      prepare an updated Research Proposal for submission to your Research Adviser.

    For this week, we will dive back into writing, editing and completing your research proposals.  You are expected to work on this at the start of Week 1, and we will meet for a writing workshop on Wednesday, 22 September 2021.

    Remember, this is a collaborative endeavor.  You may have already worked out a system with your groupmates on how to go about it (e.g. use of Google Docs or Microsoft 365, detailed tasking, etc.) but do not forget to include your Research Adviser in the loop.  You may need to reach out to your Research Adviser again (if you haven’t done that yet since the end of the last semester) to re-start the ball rolling.  You will be expected to submit the week’s output to them for comments as we finalize your Research Proposals for presentation starting Week 4.

    Some Research Advisers remarked in the Research Consultations Assessment Form in Dent199 that they wished their research advisees updated them more on their progress or gave them more time to read your outputs so they can comment appropriately on your work.  Please make sure you discuss with them a favorable turn-around time for the Research Team to do this (which may vary week-to-week for all of us).  Some also shared that they can help you balance your workload and guide you towards proper time-management.  Your Research Advisers will be your mentors, which is a key aspect to have as you do your research projects (remember the "How to Become a Successful Researcher at Every Stage of Your Career" webinar last semester?).

    Digging Deeper…

    Review the Dent198 Research Proposal Format Guidelines and the Dent198 Written Research Proposal Evaluation Tool to check what may be lacking or needs to be strengthened in your draft Research Proposals.  It is advisable that you work on updating your Research Proposals as soon as you can.

    You may also refer to the SOP II Forms of the UPM REB (https://reb.upm.edu.ph/sops-and-forms) and use them as a checklist while you develop the ethical considerations of your research that needs to be discussed in your Research Proposal.

    • Exercise #3: Updated Research Proposal (Group Task) Assignment
      Due: Wednesday, 22 September 2021, 11:59 PM
      Restricted Not available unless: The activity Exercise #2: Research Proposal Updates at the End of the Mid-Year Term (Group Task) is marked complete
  • Week 2 (23-29 September 2021)

    Audio-Visual Presentations

    29 September 2021

    9:30AM to 11:00AM

    You have already experienced doing a presentation regarding your research proposal in Dent199 through the 3MTÒ Presentations.  For Dent198 (and Dent197 next semester), a more formal presentation will be required from your Research Group.

    At the end of this session, you are expected to be able to:

    1.      discuss how a scientific audio-visual presentation can be done;

    2.      apply the oral presentation guidelines and criteria for evaluation to an online delivery; and

    3.      prepare a 15-minute presentation of your Research Proposal to an Experts Panel.

    Go through the Dent198 Online Research Proposal Presentation Guidelines and the Rubrics for Oral Presentations prior to the discussions.  Keep the following questions in mind while you review the guidelines and while participating in the discussions:

    ·        What aspects/sections of the research proposal must be highlighted in the Research Proposal Presentation?

    ·        How can my Research Group make the Research Proposal Presentation engaging yet maintaining the formality of a scientific exercise?

    ·        What steps does my Research Group need to do in preparing the Research Proposal Presentation?

    Looking forward to your Research Team’s online Research Proposal Presentation!

    Digging Deeper…

    You may revisit your Group’s 3MTÒ Presentations from Dent199 and try to evaluate them.  Guided by comments you got from the Faculty and your classmates, determine the improvements that you need to do this time around.  Look at the presentation in general (e.g. will we engage the audience better if we incorporated a talking head in the video?) and the content (e.g. should we focus on the study’s significance more?, how detailed must the methodology be?, etc.).

    Writing Workshop:  Finalizing the Research Proposal

    29 September 2021

    11:00AM to 12:30PM

    Students may use the time to continue collaborating to finish their Group Tasks particularly the initial version of the full Research Proposal which is due on Wednesday, 06 October 2021.

    Research Proposal Presentations

    Session 1

    13 October 2021

    After all the preparation and collaborative efforts since Dentistry 199, you will now present your Research Proposal.

    After the sessions, you are expected to be able to:

      1. demonstrate knowledge about your planned research with a 15-minute presentation;
      2. manage the questions raised by the Experts Panel and the other members of the audience during your presentation;
      3. organize the comments and suggestions raised during your Research Proposal Presentation;
      4. assess the research proposal presentation of other groups; and
      5. revise your Research Proposal to obtain technical and ethical approval.

    Refer to the Research Proposal Presentation Guidelines on the conduct of the research proposal presentations, and the steps to follow in finalizing the research proposal before it is submitted to the UP Manila Research Ethics Board for ethical approval.

    As a reminder:

    1.     coordinate your presentation schedule with your Research Adviser

    2.     constitute your Experts Panel (minimum of three)

    3.     limit your actual presentation to 15 minutes with the rest of the time allotted for a Q&A with the audience

    4.     all Research Group members must have a copy of the video presentation (if pre-recorded) and all must be ready to share it on screen

    5.     an emcee/moderator must be designated by the class for each breakout room or each presentation

    6.     a pre-recorded presentation or the slide deck to be used in the presentation MUST NOT be sent to the Experts Panel members prior to the Research Proposal Presentation

    A Q&A will follow each presentation and the students are expected to participate during the sessions by asking questions.  Students must be ready to give their comments to the presentations when prompted by the Faculty.

    Presenters are expected to have a better grasp of the details of their planned research compared to their 3MTÒ Presentations in Dentistry 199.  The Experts Panel and the Faculty may nitpick on the different sections of the Research Proposal, but the intent is to help you in improving your Research Proposal.  Take note of the discussions that come up during your presentation and use these in revising and finalizing your Research Proposal.  You are also expected to collate these comments for Exercise #6.

    The students are strongly encouraged to attend the research proposal presentations as they can learn from their classmates’ presentations and from the exchange of ideas with the Experts Panel.  These can be used to further improve their own Research Proposals.

    Digging Deeper…

    Though not required, students are invited to evaluate the Research Proposal Presentations of their classmates.  Assessing the work of your peers while appraising them in the context of the discussions during the Q&A will lead to a richer experience in learning about the research process and the intricacies of different types of research or topics.

    READING BREAK

    • Week 7 (28 October - 10 November 2021)

      UPM REB Review Process

      10 November 2021

      9:30AM to 11:00AM

      After your Basic Research Ethics Seminar last semester, you are familiar with the basic ethical principles and can incorporate them in your Research Proposal.  As you are revising (or have already revised) your Research Proposal after your oral presentation, let us review the process of the UP Manila Research Ethics Board (UPM REB) to facilitate the submission of your research proposals for ethical approval.

      At the end of this week, you are expected to be able to:

      1.     recall the ethical review process of researches in UP Manila;

      2.     compose an ethically-sound research proposal after incorporating the inputs during your research proposal presentation; and

      3.     complete the corresponding forms needed in submitting your research proposal to UPM REB for ethical review.

      You have constantly been reminded to “use the UPM REB Forms as a checklist if you missed out on some aspects of the Research Proposal” while you were developing your Research Proposal.  Now, you will use the UPM REB Forms as they are intended to.  During the session, we will go through the UPM REB Forms and point out how these will be filled-out.

      Prior to the session, access the SOP II Forms from the UPM REB website (https://reb.upm.edu.ph/sops-and-forms) and fill-out the forms that would be appropriate for your submission to UPM REB.  You are expected to submit these preliminarily-filled out forms prior to the session.

      Preparing UPM REB Revisions

      24 November 2021

      9:30AM to 11:00AM

      It was shared by the UPM REB in previous Basic Research Ethics Seminars for Dental Students that most research proposals submitted for ethical approval will need to submit revisions.  Just like when you work with your Research Adviser on your research proposal, it may take multiple back-and-forths before the version will be ready for presentation or ready for initial submission to UPM REB.  We will go through the basic steps and some tips on how to go about preparing your research proposal for resubmission to UPM REB.

      At the end of this week, you are expected to be able to:

      1.     recall the ethical review process of researches in UP Manila;

      2.     recall the turn-around time for resubmissions and the validity of UPM REB ethical approval;

      3.     identify the specific UPM REB forms to be used in initial submission and resubmissions of undergraduate research proposals;

      4.     apply a plan with the Research Team on how to respond to a UPM REB Action Letter; and

      5.     prepare properly filled-out forms and correspondences for resubmissions to UPM REB.

      Prior to the session, access the SOP II Forms from the UPM REB website (https://reb.upm.edu.ph/sops-and-forms) and be familiarized with the forms you have not yet filled-out in Week 7, particularly UPM REB Form 2(H).

      Though there will be no outputs for this week’s session, the Groups are expected to be able to appropriately respond to UPM REB upon receipt of their Action Letters.

      Workshop:  Preparing for Research Implementation

      01 December 2021

      In tracking the progress of undergraduate researches in UPCD, an apparent delay in the research process has been seen in starting the research implementation.  Despite having a detailed methodology in their approved research proposals, preparing for research implementation would stump a novice researcher.  For this Workshop, all Groups should prepare a plan that can facilitate starting the research implementation as soon as the research proposal’s ethical approval (or exemption) is obtained from UPM REB.

      At the end of this week, you are expected to be able to:

      1.     recognize the need to prepare for research implementation;

      2.     identify preparatory steps needed by your Research Team before starting data collection; and

      3.     prepare a plan/checklist of the preparatory steps that can be efficiently started once the research proposal is approved/exempted by UPM REB.

      After a brief lecture, the Research Groups will be in their Breakout Rooms to work on their plan/checklist of preparatory steps prior to data collection.  We will later convene to the main Zoom Room to allow short presentations of the Research Groups on their plan/checklist.  Even if your Research Proposals have not been submitted to UPM REB yet (or finalized yet), all Research Groups should already have a general idea of what they need to prepare based on their methodology and their projected time table.

      Please refer to the Exercise #9 posting for details of the required workshop output.

      Digging Deeper…

      As will be discussed during the Workshop, tasks to prepare for prior to research implementation will vary depending on the research topic, the type of research and other factors.  You may want to go through the Mid-Decade Goals Survey Handbook by UNICEF as an additional reference.  It was written to prepare survey coordinators and technical resource persons for data collection in their Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys on issues that directly affect the lives of children and women.  Though it was primarily intended as a Handbook for face-to-face data collection, your Research Team can get additional pointers on how and what to prepare for before embarking on your research implementation.
