You are not alone is this challenge of giving feedback to students. I have felt the exactly the same whenever I deliver feedback particularly when its content is on the negative side. Finding the right words that won't hurt their feelings is always an extra challenge, but just like the old saying goes, truth hurts, but it is the truth. I agree with the feeling of resistance whenever we say things that are not acceptable to students, but I think the art of delivering bad news is a skill and it comes with practice. I think my personality of being to formal and serious contributes to this effect that is why I try to crack jokes in between to dissolve the tension in the room whenever it is feedback time. Lastly, I could suggest the powerful line that I have been using to begin my feedback, that is, this is not something personal this is related to your performance. Listen to improve, be challenged to do better. Hope this works for you also.
