COURSE ORIENTATION
Background
Clinical teaching is an essential component of the BSN Program as it helps in the transfer and actualization of theoretical knowledge into practice. To achieve effective clinical teaching and learning experiences, UP College of Nursing partners with registered nurses working in different hospital areas to guide and assist students during their clinical experiences. However, it has been argued that while clinical area nurses are a better option for providing real practical support to nursing students as they are considered expert clinicians, not all of them have backgrounds in teaching hence the need to provide them with educational support that would help them effectively supervise and teach student nurses.
At the end of this, students will be able to:
- Define the roles and responsibilities of the preceptor
- Differentiate the various styles of learning and utilize methods to identify and address clinical learning needs
- Apply the principles of effective communication in the context of clinical preceptorship
- Describe the activities of the preceptors in providing teaching, learning, and supervising
- Demonstrate ability to constructively evaluate a nursing student’s learning performance
- Address potential problems experienced in preceptorship

Recognizing the education philosophy you believe in is important in constructing your own. You can perform a self-assessment through this questionnaire using a scoring guide.
Instructions:
-
Respond to the given statements on a scale from 1, "Strongly Disagree," to 5, "Strongly Agree."
-
Record the number of your answer along with the question number for scoring.
-
Record the number you chose for each statement in the self-assessment in the spaces given.
-
Add the numbers for each section to obtain your score for that section.
-
The highest score(s) indicates your educational philosophy and psychological orientation.
Share in this forum how your teaching philosophy will affect the way you do clinical teaching
-
Share your latest experience on how the clinical area is an advantage and a disadvantage to student learning. Please upload your responses here in our discussion forum in the UPM VLE. Don’t forget to respond to at least two (2) other participants’ responses.
Looking forward to your response.
Identify your concern about being assigned as one of the clinical teachers. E.g. I am too shy and think that I will have challenges in communicating with student nurses.
Write your answers in our discussion forum. Please feel free to respond to the other participants’ answers with your suggestions or recommendations to address their concerns.

Analyze the factors that should be considered in the design of instruction
-
Formulate outcomes for a selected clinical learning experience
