Am I a good clinical teacher?

Hello everyone. Unlike most of you here, I have only been practicing as a clinician and a clinical teacher for a few years. However, rather than a disadvantage I see it as a great opportunity to keep learning, discovering, and exploring what it means to be a good clinical teacher.

Strengths
My interns and I are only a few years apart in age thus it gives me the advantage of being able to understand their thoughts and feelings. I am also relatively good at counseling so it's easier to talk to them and counsel them. As I am practicing while teaching, it gives me an advantage to immediately share to my interns what I have learned from my current practice. I have good theoretical knowledge and am able to convey information in a way that is understandable even to a layman.

Areas to Improve

I am still learning the ff. aspects of clinical teaching:

  1. Accurately identifying how my interns’ think and reason about their patient’s case
  2. Identifying and facilitating strategies that accurately and effectively meet my interns’ needs (e.g. when to provide and how to balance posing questions and providing them with answers)
  3. Identifying and facilitating assessment methods that accurately and effectively assesses my interns’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes
  4. Providing different methods of feedback and when to best use them

To work on them, so far for me it has been a combination of experimentation and asking & applying feedback from interns and colleagues. That is why through this class (HP223) I hope to learn more and to be guided on what areas I still have to learn and improve on :D

Hi, thank you for this sincere insights about your clinical teaching experience. This is so true that being just a few years ahead from your students gives you the advantage of relating to them more, especially in the non-academic facets of their lives - perspective in life and career, study and working habits, etc. Students will see you not only as a clinical teacher, but more of an adviser, friend or a mentor, and you can use this situations to perform and achieve your goals as a good clinical teacher.

Hello Marie,

As an incoming and not so experienced clinical teacher myself, I can truly relate to your insights. I still have lots of things I have to learn to be better than what I am now. The things you consider as the areas you need to improve on are also the things I am having problems myself. Perhaps because of the limitations our area has, these things become a challenge not just for the trainees but also myself. Anyhow, it is nice to know that I can relate to someone here and that we hope to learn more in this class and be good clinical teachers someday.
