Hello everyone. Unlike most of you here, I have only been practicing as a clinician and a clinical teacher for a few years. However, rather than a disadvantage I see it as a great opportunity to keep learning, discovering, and exploring what it means to be a good clinical teacher.
Strengths
My interns and I are only a few years apart in age thus it gives me the advantage of being able to understand their thoughts and feelings. I am also relatively good at counseling so it's easier to talk to them and counsel them. As I am practicing while teaching, it gives me an advantage to immediately share to my interns what I have learned from my current practice. I have good theoretical knowledge and am able to convey information in a way that is understandable even to a layman.
Areas to Improve
I am still learning the ff. aspects of clinical teaching:
- Accurately identifying how my interns’ think and reason about their patient’s case
- Identifying and facilitating strategies that accurately and effectively meet my interns’ needs (e.g. when to provide and how to balance posing questions and providing them with answers)
- Identifying and facilitating assessment methods that accurately and effectively assesses my interns’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes
- Providing different methods of feedback and when to best use them
To work on them, so far for me it has been a combination of experimentation and asking & applying feedback from interns and colleagues. That is why through this class (HP223) I hope to learn more and to be guided on what areas I still have to learn and improve on :D
