- Closed: Friday, 1 July 2022, 12:00 AM
In order to obtain access to the module on Fluids and Electrolytes for Interns please complete this pre-test exam.
For the pre-test, please refer to the following case:
E.M., 17/M was rushed to the E.R for generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Patient is a frat neophyte who was “requested-to-participate” in a 10km marathon run by his frat brods. With no experience/training in competitive sports, he allegedly took 1 tablet of Ectasy (as claimed by his co-neophytes) prior to the run for added endurance.
Co- runners noted that he refused to drink from the hydration (water) stations and instead, just gulped 2 liters of distilled water after crossing the finish line. 30 minutes after, he lost consciousness and went into generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
In the E.R.:1) Seizures still on-going (total time: ≈ 15mins)
2) BP 80/50 HR 130 Temp = 40C
Estimated wt= 60kg Dry oral mucosa
3) Distant heart sounds, R basal coarse rales
4) Patient intubated
5) Seizure finally controlled after 10mg Diazepam IV and 300mg Phenytoin IV given
6) BP stabilized at 100 systolic after 2.0L PNSS administered ( FD: 1,000mL, then 200cc/hr)

Evidence Based Medicine
- Opened: Sunday, 26 July 2020, 12:00 AM
This module discusses the definition of Evidence Based Medicine or EBM, and the steps in practising EBM.
Evidence-based medicine says that we should be guided by the best available evidence when making healthcare decisions. This usually means having to read research articles, appraising them, and finally, deciding how to apply the results to our patients. Reading research papers can take a lot of time, something we all have too little of. By following the tips in this video, you will be able to read papers quickly and more efficiently.
How to Appraise Journal Articles
This module provides exercises in appraising an article on therapy and a systematic review. By the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. Formulate a focused, answerable clinical question;
2. Evaluate directness, validity, and applicability of the results; and,
3. Apply the evidence to an individual patient.
Additional Resources
This series of video tutorials by Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill demonstrate how to appraise journal articles that answer the 4 basic types of clinical questions: therapy, diagnosis, prognosis, and harm.
The University of Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine website provides critical appraisal worksheets for different types of articles in different languages.
The latest edition of Painless Evidence-Based Medicine presents "basic concepts and application of research statistics in a simple and practical manner" that is easy to understand and apply in clinical practice. Each chapter provides a guide to appraising a specific type of question and tackle boxes to explain important EBM concepts.
*Disclosure: Dr. Lia M. Palileo-Villanueva, who developed this EBM module, is a chapter author in this edition of Painless Evidence-Based Medicine.
Students 4 Best Evidence is a network for students interested in evidence-based health care. It contains several useful resources on critical appraisal, research, and all things EBM.

- Due: Sunday, 26 July 2020, 12:00 AM
Please post any questions or clarifications you might have on anything EBM in this forum.
Live chat to answer any questions that you might have on anything EBM on Wednesday, July 29, 2p to 3p.

Medical Parasitology Review
This examination consists of twenty (20) multiple-choice questions that deal with basic concepts of host-parasite relationship, parasite life cycle and morphology, immunoparasitology, pathogenesis of parasitic diseases and the role of arthropods in disease transmission. You are given fifteen (15) minutes to finish the test, after which the attempt will automatically close. This test will be accessible from Aug 25 8AM to Aug 27 12MN.
