In this course, students will look into the psychological and philosophical foundations of learning and teaching, and how these theories and philosophies affect their decisions as an educator of health professionals.

  • OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE

  • Module 1. THE LEARNER, TEACHER & THE LEARNING SITUATION

This first module answers the questions WHO and WHEN of Teaching and Learning.  Education never happens in a vacuum.  There is always a CONTEXT and a good teacher designs instruction to fit the specific and immediate context of the task.

  • Module 2. PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS of TEACHING AND LEARNING

This second module studies the WHAT and WHY of Education.  We will discuss the basic concepts of philosophy and the importance of having an integrated philosophy of life to have CONSISTENCY in one’s thoughts and behavior. You should be able to analyze your institution's VMG, and formulate your own Teaching Philosophy.

  • Module 3. PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

This third module will answer the question HOW does Learning occur.  We will discuss the major learning theories and how they have tried to explain the many elements and processes of learning.  The students will understand that there is no one way of learning, and therefore there is no one correct way of teaching.  Drawing from their experiences, the students will gain an understanding of unique learning styles, and identify the teaching styles that work for them.
