      Course Description

      General principles of organization and management of health programs and health agencies; relationships of participant’s institution to the other agencies in the National Health Plan. Operation of participant’s institution, his own and other’s role within it.  Utilization of these principles in educational change.

      “Ours has become, for better or for worse, a society of organizations.  We are born in organizations, and are educated in organizations, so that we can later work in organizations.  Organizations supply us and exploit us, they nurture us and torment us.  But most of us must resign ourselves to spending a great deal of our public  and private lives dealing with them.  We all need to understand them better.” (Mintzberg)

       In this course, students will look into their own organizations within the perspective of understanding how it works and how it can be managed more effectively.

      Just like any other organizational systems, educational systems are affected by changes at the local, national, and global levels. I am sure most of you are familiar with the Lancet Article "Health Professionals for a New Century. Please read the article (this time as an organization person) and reflect of how the call for transformative education would impact on your (educational) organization or institution. Below, I embedded several figures from the report that I believe are important in understanding better the relationship between the health system and the education system.

      Key points about Educational system and Health System :

      1. Education system must be responsive to needs and demands of the health care system.

      2. To achieve the goal of 'transformative education' there should be both instructional and institutional change.

    • The characteristics or attributes of an organization is a reflection, in more ways than one, of the vision, mission, and beliefs of stakeholders behind the organization.

      In this unit, we will discuss the different organizational theories and in the end use your understanding of these theories to analyze and eventually write a technical paper about your (selected) organization. Because of the current context, you will work collaboratively online on assigned group topics.

      The overall character of an organization is dependent in so many ways to its founders vision, mission, ang goals. However, organizations are also influenced very much by the changing organizational paradigm brought about by the popular organizational thoughts dominant during a certain period.

      Assignment Objectives:

      Students should be able to:

      1. Utilize understanding of different organizational theories in analyzing own organization.
      2. Write a technical paper discussing result of your comprehensive analysis of selected organization.

    In this unit, you will be introduced to the basic management process of planning, leading, organizing, and controlling.  This unit will also help you look into your own institution’s management processes, clarifying your role as part of the organization.  Different leadership styles will also be discussed and how each style affects your own organization’s decision-making processes.

        Theme Overview:

        Before we proceed to the main theme of this unit, the Management Planning Process, I thought discussing organizational change would be appropriate for setting up the context.

        Hopefully, starting this unit with a discussion on 'Organizational Change' will help you understand why you need to learn and go through the management process.

        Reflective Activity

        Reflect on a major change that has occurred in a school or organization with which you are familiar. Using Kurt Lewin's concept of force-field analysis, identify the driving and restraining forces that were in play prior to and during the change process that helped unfreeze and drive the organization towards change (page 236-240).

        NOTE: HPA is useful for analyzing problems related to 'behavior' and you plan to do use 'behavior change model' as your program approach.

        In this interactive, you will experience going through some steps used in health problem analysis. First you and your team should decide on the health problem to address, this will be followed by a brainstorming on the possible risk factors, and then you sort these factors into categories. You will end with an exercise on converting the problem statements you generated to statement of Goals and Objectives.         Two important initial steps in any planning process is problem analysis and problem prioritization.

        Therefore, your assignment is to be able to do the following:

        1. Identify a core problem that you want to change through a 'strategic action plan.'
        2. Analyze this core problem using available problem analysis tools. Your first output should be a graphical presentation of your problem analysis.
        3. After doing a detailed problem analysis, your next step is to do a problem prioritization. You can use the tools discussed in class to do problem prioritization.
