1. Takeaway from the Video
The significance of creating and ensuring a psychologically safe and supportive learning environment for nursing students during their clinical duty is the relevant takeaway from the video. Clinical instructors should view the clinical area as the arena where knowledge will be applied, skills will be developed, and attitudes will be formed, rather than a place for assessment and evaluation. In addition, educators can encourage the learners to take risks, engage deeply in the learning experience, and recognize responses by means of setting clear expectations, and constructive feedback as an approach for them to improve. This promotes collaborative relationship between the teacher and students, as well as fosters a meaningful learning process.
2. Challenges Encountered when Giving Feedback
It is a concern when a given feedback is received in the way it is intended. There are cases when students appear defensive, specifically, if they perceive feedback as a reflection of their competence. One more challenge is balancing being true about the subjects for improvement while ensuring the confidence and motivation of the students.
3. Overcoming the Challenges
I have learned to frame feedback within the progress and potential of the students, instead of focusing on areas that needs improvement. In addition, I ensure to build rapport and trust with my students starting on their first few days in the clinical area which will promote the psychologically safe learning environment. I will utilize specific, observable examples and focusing on behaviors rather than personal traits help depersonalize the feedback. Lastly, I will reassure a two-way communication, letting the learners to reflect and share their perspective, to have a more collaborative and less evaluative feedback.
