Rationale

The study will discuss the effect of Eraserheads as a popular music influence in the early 1990s Philippines, and the impact of Tarantadong Kalbo comics in the 2020s. It studies how these relevant artists utilize their creative freedom to make instrumental statements and inspire communities in challenging ideologies and opinions. As both are considered to be mainstream forms of entertainment, the study delves deeper into its role in influencing the nation’s perspectives in social and political discussions as popular media in mass consumption. 

Objectives

The study has the following objectives:

  1. To scrutinize the initiatives of Eraserheads and Tarantadong Kalbo as a tool for raising socio-political awareness in their respective creative mediums.

  2. To study the effectiveness of their art in connecting issues in societal concerns and livelihood.

  3. To assess how these art forms are able to address the imbalances in classes through popular culture, breaking the ideology of being solely entertainment. 

Methodology

To analyze these independent creative artists, this study will utilize the concept of Cultural Hegemony. It will be framed within the Gramscian Theory, a Marxist philosophical approach. This study will evaluate the influence of Eraserheads and Tarantadong Kalbo in challenging dominant ideologies in popular culture to criticize what “normal” is defined to be in the industry. It will examine the strong lyricism and songwriting of Ely Buendia, along with the contextual, provocative messages of Kevin Raymundo’s comics.
