Checklist as Assessment Tool

Having a checklist is a good way to assess clinical competencies. With 5 students under him, I think filling out the checklist at the end of the day is a doable thing. This is assuming that he is already very familiar with the tool. However, I do recommend that at the end of the week, he would make an effort to tell each student which skills they have to improve on. This will ensure that by the 4th week, each student’s checklist is almost complete.

Doing a group feedback can be beneficial if the students know what they are supposed to learn. In other words, the students must also have a copy of the check list so that they themselves will make an effort to master the skills they are supposed to learn in the burn unit.

Group feedback is also a good way of giving feedback, especially if time is a challenge. However, this will only be good for giving general comments on good points you want to reinforce and bad points that you want to correct that is common to the entire group. This would also be good for sharing feedback on group processes and performance. But if the assessment was done individually, then individual feedback is warranted. We as evaluators need to make time for that.
