Reflecting on the lesson
Choose one concept in our lesson today, give a brief explanation about the concept and cite how would you apply this learning in your everyday life.
As we all know, the immune system serves as a barrier to defend ourselves from any illness or harm within our body. A strong immune system will keep us robust to fight and attack potential threats. Sleep is one of the significant components of the immune system as it releases proteins called cytokines, which are associated with inflammation. During sleep, breathing and muscular activity decrease, freeing up resources to perform vital functions. Inflammation happens during sleep hence, processes at night may unfold because physical and mental performance will be affected if it will undergo during waking hours. Although the immune system will function when you sleep, it is essential to note that this process is self-regulating. The body's circadian clock reduces this inflammation as sleep time shortens. The delicate balance of immune activity is necessary for both innate and adaptive immunity and is thus made possible by having adequate high-quality sleep.
It is evident that if you are a college student, you have numerous tasks needed to be accomplished, resulting in as an all-night student, and I admit I am one of them. As I learned this relevant concept, I realized that having a lack of sleep will make my body weak and vulnerable to infectious diseases. Moreover, in the long run, it will affect different systems in my body, such as the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease. Hence, I need to improve my sleeping schedule, time management, and be conscious of my body.
