Challenges in the blended senior clerkship program

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions that resulted from it, the pre-pandemic medical clerkship was purely face-to-face experiential learning.  The sudden suspension of the clerkship duties in March 2020 resulted in a drastic change into purely online mode.   The curriculum of the clerkship was designed for purely onsite or face-to-face. Hence, being the Clerkship Program Director, I was faced with a flawed curriculum that is not ready for purely online.  The faculty made modifications to ensure continuity of the program, but, practically, there was no "curriculum" being followed, nor were the program learning outcomes attained.  The situation also resulted in various modifications in the instructional designs in the different clinical departments.  Then, in March 2021, when limited face-to-face duties were initiated, the learning mode shifted to a hybrid clerkship, which eventually shifted to the present blended clerkship, primarily face-to-face but technology-enhanced clerkship.  The progressive shifting of clerkship teaching-learning platforms brought further challenges to the management and implementation of the existing curriculum.  The necessity is evident to overhaul the curriculum and ensure consistency in whatever medium or mode of implementation of the teaching-learning activities of the clerkship.  The creation of such a consistent curriculum would entail a lot of effort and collaborative work among the faculty, the administration, and the students.
