I had an experience with a 1st year nursing student during an RLE in a hospital male ward performing a bed bath for a patient. The nursing student is very helpful showing enthusiasm and willingness to provide care.

But during the procedure, I observed that something was not right, there are missing steps in the procedure, such as keeping the privacy of the patient, proper positioning of the patient, and ensuring safety of the patient. Even though he has the right attitude and readiness to help, his techniques needed guidance to align with the nursing standards and principles.

In that instance, I know that I need to guide him step by step, explaining the importance of draping for privacy, using proper body mechanics, and maintaining infection control practices.

In the feedback and debriefing session with him. I acknowledged his positive attitude and effort, pointing out the areas for improvement and giving him words of encouragement. I reassured him that making mistakes is part of the learning processs, however we need to always think of the overall welfare of the patient. Learn and improve the next time you do it.
