I chose Maternal and Child Nursing (MCN) as my field of specialization because of its unique blend of technical expertise, emotional intelligence, and life-affirming impact. During my fieldwork, I was deeply moved by the pivotal role nurses play in ensuring safe pregnancies, healthy deliveries, and nurturing early childhood development even in the community setting. The opportunity to care for two lives, the mother and her child, offered a profound sense of purpose and responsibility. Witnessing the strength of women during childbirth and being part of that intimate, life-changing moment solidified my commitment to this specialty. My first specialty area when I was in the clinical was in the NICU and Delivery Room Complex. Considering this area of nursing practice, I have developed competencies and skills needed to perform in this field. Moreover, the influence of my clinical instructor when I was in university helped me embrace the uniqueness of MCN.
To encourage students to consider MCN, I strive to highlight the humanistic and transformative aspects of the field. I incorporate storytelling, simulation, and reflective practice into my teaching, helping students see beyond the clinical tasks to the deep interpersonal connections that define maternal and child care. I also expose them to positive role models and real patient narratives, allowing them to appreciate the diversity, complexity, and emotional rewards of this specialization. By fostering empathy, critical thinking, and advocacy, I hope to inspire students to see MCN not just as a career path, but as a calling that shapes healthier families and communities.
