In many spheres of life, it offers a chance to see both possible advantages and disadvantages of education. Although it also brings certain challenges that need thought, the clinical sector offers several advantages. Although practical skills are enhanced by experienced instruction, it can also cause stress in students who could find it difficult to apply theoretical information in real-world situations. Still, the clinical field it provides for the student presents a real-world scenario they can find themselves in going forward.
Advantage: Though textbooks do not reflect the breadth of experience encountered in clinical practice, actual patients often display symptoms that diverge from textbook descriptions; however, the clinical setting offers a wide range of knowledge and skills necessary for students regardless of their degree of schooling. According to Elliot (2002) and Napthine (1996), the quality of practical experience determines most the degree of nursing education. Being in a hospital environment—especially inside government buildings—offers many chances for learning and multiple occasions that help to expand my skill set.
The clinical area gives students the chance to apply nursing theory acquired in the classroom, so acting as their fundamental guiding concept in the professional field. Using these ideas helps students to combine academic knowledge with practical application thereby improving their critical thinking and decision-making ability. This experiential learning helps individuals to grasp the complexity of patient care with confidence and skill.
This clinical area helps students progress by providing them with knowledge of their future employment and the disciplines they want to specialize in or master. These encounters help them to better grasp patient care and provide direction and meaning for their next professions. Therefore, the basis for their professional growth is absolutely clinical exposure. Moreover, it encourages students to participate in critical thinking and problem-solving, skills essential for negotiating the complexities of healthcare. By means of their contacts with patients and healthcare providers, they learn essential skills that go beyond textbooks, therefore developing sympathetic and competent practitioners.
As a future teacher, I want to help my students to explore knowledge using several approaches that boost their critical thinking and curiosity. Combining useful tasks and real-world applications will help me to create interesting surroundings where students can link theory to practice.
Disadvantage: Difficult circumstances, such handling severely ill patients or loss, which can be emotionally draining, might arise for students. It is imperative to let the student participate in seminars or workshops to address the given anxiety so that they more ready to expose for such kind of situations. Perhaps some of us had experienced this kind of challenges especially those first patient we handled, or the first patient died on our care. To properly negotiate these problems, they must create coping mechanisms and ask peers or mentors for help. Their general quality of life can be much improved by developing resilience and preserving a good balance between personal and professional life.
While advance equipment is much superior, clinical learning is most successful when students have access to sufficient tools. Lack of equipment it hard to students to apply the acquired care techniques. Such difficulties are common in government and provincial hospitals when students find a gap between theoretical understanding and practical application. Students engage in a series of return demonstrations and simulations for thorough preparation before they arrive in the clinical scene. But when they interact with the instruments through which they are learning, we, as clinical educators, find it imperative to emphasize the theoretical models, guidelines, and ideas taught in the classroom.
By allowing students to practice and hone their skills in a realistic environment, equipment may greatly enhance the learning process. Without the necessary tools, students could find it difficult to meet the expected level of care in pragmatic environments.
The acquisition of clinical skills is much influenced by the rivalry among students for learning chances as well as by the many students in the same clinical location. Usually working weekends to have enough experience in the delivery and surgery rooms due to the great number of students rotating in those areas, I clearly remember walking around 2 AM to arrive at the hospital by 4 AM as a third-year student nurse.
To succeed in their future occupations in this competitive environment, students have to improve their technical skills and also develop strong communication and teamwork traits. This dynamic helps students to grow and learn from one another at the same time, therefore fostering cooperation as well as rivalry. All those people will eventually become colleagues and work closely together.
