The video Building skills in clinical education: Facilitating the learning journey might be short, but their conversation is very meaningful and applicable in a clinical setting. I was caught by the statement of Teresa that feedback can provide a psychologically safe environment, but the learner can have increased risk and benefits from the experience. Giving prompt feedback right away following clinical duty aids students in making the connection between remarks, comments, and particular actions that can improve their learning. Students' motivation is maintained and growth is encouraged when constructive criticism and positive reinforcement are combined. That feedback is one of the steps of the learning process. Students can evaluate their performance and get a greater comprehension of clinical procedures by participating in dialogues. I fully agree with Anne that constructive feedback supports learning and learning growth and provides learning opportunities for the student to improve. Encouraging students to evaluate themselves and consider their clinical experiences fosters critical thinking and continuous development as we provide an intentional learning environment and clarify expectations from them.Â
One of the observable challenges I always encounter when giving feedback is that students may become defensive or anxious as a result of feeling frightened by criticism, which can impede their learning. As much as I can, I establish a nurturing atmosphere where criticism is presented as a chance for improvement. Stress that making mistakes is a necessary aspect of learning. Another is the opportunities for in-depth feedback sessions may be limited in busy clinical settings. I make use of quick, targeted feedback throughout or just after clinical activities. Planning of frequent check-ins to talk about students’ progress and resolve issues. Lastly, some feedback can be misunderstood by students, which could cause misunderstandings regarding expectations. To make sure they understand, I ask students to rephrase their comments. Give specific instances and recommendations that can be put into practice. In order to produce skilled and competent learners, effective feedback in nursing education is essential. We can improve student learning and encourage professional development by identifying shared difficulties and putting strategic solutions into practice.
