My personal experience with research has been with relatively simple and straightforward study procedures, so I don't have direct experience with fabrication or falsification in research. I -did- hear about a case of fabrication of research data in the past, where patient consent and gathered data were allegedly fabricated. It was reported anonymously, which now makes me wonder what protocols we have in the College (and University) on reporting such instances. When the investigation was done, the researcher in question was subjected to disciplinary processes. If we were watching this as a movie, then we would be celebrating that the "villain was caught;" but typing about a real life situation in this way, I began to imagine that it must have grieved the person who reported, as well as the authorities who had to act. I just realized that there are no winners with fabricated (or falsified) data.
