I have only encountered plagiarism on social media and I have seen how “netizens” called out those who plagiarized. This might not be part of the scientific community but it was sad to see that the people who committed those acts got away without apologizing to the original sources.

The nearest thing I encountered was the infamous plagiarism incident involving Senator Sotto. This was reported, discussed and tackled but unfortunately, since we do not have a system in place relating to people in authority committing plagiarism, this became a play of power. I remember the outrage I felt when this senator refused to apologize and instead berated the source for being just a blogger. By reading Mr. Bercero’s (2018) timeline review of the events relating to said plagiarism incident, it was gratifying to know that they had eventually admitted that they indeed copied the said texts. However, this senator reiterated that plagiarism is not a crime and that he did not violated any law (Sotto, 2012). This event only shows that without proper system in place, intellectual properties can easily be stolen without any repercussions.
