Injection Site: Anterolateral thigh
Target Muscles: Vastus lateralis muscle

Origin: Greater trochanter and lateral lip of the linea aspera of the femur.

Insertion: Patella via the quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament.

Action: Extends the knee.
Locating the Vastus Lateralis:

Position the infant lying on their back.

Identify the middle third of the thigh between the hip and the knee.
-
The injection site is in the anterolateral aspect of the thigh, in the middle third.
2.
Injection Site: Upper arm
Target Muscle: Deltoid muscle

Origin: Lateral third of the clavicle, acromion, and spine of the scapula.

Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of the humerus.
-
Action: Abducts, flexes, and extends the arm.
Locating the Deltoid Muscle:

Have the patient relax their arm.
-
Identify the acromion process (the bony point at the top of the shoulder).
-
The injection site is approximately 2 inches (5 cm) below the acromion process, in the middle of the deltoid muscle.
