Injection Site: Anterolateral thigh

Target Muscles: Vastus lateralis muscle

  • Origin: Greater trochanter and lateral lip of the linea aspera of the femur.

  • Insertion: Patella via the quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament.

  • Action: Extends the knee.

Locating the Vastus Lateralis:

  1. Position the infant lying on their back.

  2. Identify the middle third of the thigh between the hip and the knee.

  3. The injection site is in the anterolateral aspect of the thigh, in the middle third.

Injection Site: Upper arm

Target Muscle: Deltoid muscle 

  • Origin: Lateral third of the clavicle, acromion, and spine of the scapula.

  • Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of the humerus.

  • Action: Abducts, flexes, and extends the arm.

Locating the Deltoid Muscle:

  1. Have the patient relax their arm.

  2. Identify the acromion process (the bony point at the top of the shoulder).

  3. The injection site is approximately 2 inches (5 cm) below the acromion process, in the middle of the deltoid muscle.
