  1. 2-month old well female infant given a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) and pentavalent vaccine (Penta) via intramuscular route
    1. Sites of injection
      1. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) — Vastus lateralis muscle in the anterolateral thigh 
      2. Pentavalent vaccine (Penta) — Anterolateral aspect of the mig-thigh

Note: These vaccines should be given as two separate injections and injected in opposite sides of the thighs

    1. Targeted muscle
      1. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) — Vastus lateralis
      2. Pentavalent vaccine (Penta) — Vastus lateralis
        1. Origin: Greater trochanter and the lateral lip of the Linea aspera of the femur and joins the quadriceps
        2. Insertion: Into the tibial tuberosity via the patella ligament
        3. Action: Extension of the knee joint, if sitting down, the vastus lateralis can extend the lower leg upward forming an extension movement

 

  1. The baby’s 65-year-old grandfather being given a flu vaccine intramuscularly.
    1. Muscle that is the preferred site for IM injection
      1. Deltoid
        1. Origin: In the clavicle and the sternum
        2. Insertion: Humerus
        3. Action: Raise the shoulder, abducting the arm
