  1.  Throwing a baseball overhead

    1. Deltoid

      1. Action: Lateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint

      2. Innervation: Axillary nerve

    2. Triceps brachii

      1. Action: Extends forearm at elbow joint and extends arm at shoulder joint

      2. Innervation: Radial nerve

  2. Kicking a ball

    1. Gluteus maximus

      1. Action: Extends thigh at hip joint ad laterally rotates thigh; helps lock knee in extension

      2. Innervation: Inferior gluteal nerve

    2. Quadriceps femoris

      1. Action:Extend leg at knee joint

      2. Innervation: Femoral nerve

  3. Doing sit-ups

    1. Rectus abdominus

      1. Action: Flexes vertebral column, especially lumbar position, and compresses abdomen

      2. Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves T7-T12

    2. Iliopsoas

      1. Action: Flex thigh at hip joint, rotate thigh laterally

      2. Innervation: Lumbar nerves L2-L3

  4. Breathing

    1. Diaphragm

      1. Action: Contraction causes it to flatten and increase vertical dimension of thoracic cavity (inhalation); contraction moves it superiorly and decrease the vertical dimension of the thoracic cavity (exhalation)

      2. Innervation: Phrenic nerve, containing axons from cervical nerves C3-C5

    2. External intercostals

      1. Action: Contraction elevates ribs and increases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of thoracic cavity (inhalation); relaxation depresses rib and decreases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions of cavity (exhalation)

      2. Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves T2-T12
