Nursing informaticists’ role in education guiding students to achieve better learning outcomes. Nursing informaticists allow students to be equipped with skills that will enhance their digital health literacy, preparing them for an ever-changing field where evidence-based practice is a must. Harerimana et al. (2022) stated that being able to use different health information systems and technological innovations will sustain their learnings even outside their classrooms.

Nursing informaticists innovate technology to improve data collection. Through the use of electronic health records (EHR), medical professionals will be guided to create better decisions for their patients and decrease the occurrence of medical errors. Booth et al. (2021) stated that AI technologies can be seen in the future of nursing practice by guiding their cognitive and decision-making. However, it is important to remember that these technologies should not undermine nurses, but rather aid them.

When nurses are able to handle and collect data efficiently, this will provide a way for researchers to collect a vast amount of data for the purpose of improving health outcomes. Bocas (2023) stated, “[P]romotes innovation and drives the advancement of healthcare knowledge.” By utilizing technology-based data collection (e.g. EHR), researchers can efficiently work towards the expansion of knowledge regarding patient care.

The role of a nurse informaticist goes well beyond simply managing electronic health records (EHRs) as it not focuses in including analytics, software engineering, workflow strategies, machine learning, and transcends to further advancements in technology (The Role of a Nurse Informaticist, n.d.)

In nursing education, they teach fellow nurses and healthcare staff on how to appropriately use new systems and help to fill in technological knowledge gaps that clinicians experience as the evolution of technology is rapid and not everyone is able to keep up or attend to knowledge enrichment efforts to master or even be competent in technologies of healthcare.

While in nursing practice, they coordinate nursing information services, establish electronic information systems, assess technological needs  to improve efficiency, train staff in digital health care systems, and improve the use of technology in clinical practice and set ups. The role of a nurse informaticist is multifaceted. It is not to be boxed in a singular responsibility as it overlaps with other responsibilities especially in the nursing field of practice.

A nurse informaticist in nursing research conducts “basic and applied research to improve the design implementation, and use of technology, data, information, and communication solutions in healthcare delivery” (American Nurses Association, 2021). Through their work, they aim to produce information and knowledge that would help them advocate for the ethical standards and principles in policy development for a more efficient and client-centered nursing care.

Nurse informaticists assume many roles in nursing education, practice, and research.

In nursing education, since this branch is focused on enhancing the future nurses’ learning experience, nurse informaticists may assume roles in curriculum development, faculty training, and teaching.

As for nursing practice, in PGH, we have the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office. This office takes care of the technological innovations made by the university. Nurses can assume roles in this by spearheading such offices, teaching other nurses how to use such innovations, and being a clinical decision support system. They can also act as change agent. In nursing informatics, we are called to become innovators and do not conform to what we are always used to. Thus, through evidence-based practice, we are called to enhance the care given to our patients.

For research, nurses can play a huge role in advancing patient care through research. They can be the researcher themselves, a research coordinator, a research analyst, or a data manager.

Aside from these fields, it is also important to recognize the role of nurse informaticists in policy development. Through evidence-based education, practice, and research, nurses have the knowledge to determine what programs/innovations that can benefit patients the most. Thus, this can be turned into a policy to have a standard when it comes to patient care.

Nursing informatics is a field that links nursing with computer and information sciences with the goal of developing and using technology for improving nursing care and patient outcomes (Guzzetti, 2024). In line with this, nursing informaticists contribute to the computerized collection, organization, and interpretation of health data that helps other fields of nursing evolve.

In nursing education that prepares students to provide holistic and evidence-based nursing care, nursing informaticists directly contribute to the “evidence” or information on which nursing education is based. Nursing informaticists’ research and data collection contributes to the constant refinement of what is considered the “best practice” in nursing, allowing nursing students to learn updated information and skills.

In practice, especially in the hospital setting, nursing informaticists have developed various technologies such as electronic medical records (EMRs) and computerized provider order entry (CPOE) that allow for improved access to information and seamless communication amongst the members of the healthcare team (Guzzetti, 2024). As such, nursing informaticists’ role in nursing practice is working towards technology that helps make patient care safer, more efficient, and more holistic. Nurses can then use these software to access patients’ medical information, updated lab and imaging results, and physician’s orders, so they can incorporate this information into their care plans.

Finally, in research, where their role is arguably most defined, nursing informaticists look into various health topics such as methods in conducting patient care and how nursing practices affect patient outcomes (American Nurses Association, 2022). Their research can then be utilized by nurses of various specialties in order to improve their practice.

Thus, the overall role of nursing informaticists in my view is to contribute to both the nursing field and general healthcare through the contribution of information collected through technology.

There are several roles that nurse informaticists assume. Starting with nursing education, one role that they assume is how, just like in this course, can create a curriculum that enhances the knowledge of students in terms of nursing informatics and how they can improve their skills further. In terms of nursing practice, they assume the role of being in charge transitioning of the documentation aspect of hospitals from traditional documentation to digital documentation. Furthermore, they can assist with making it more convenient for health workers to access the data from one place. For instance, in terms of the OPD area of PGH, they handle the patients by accessing it through one GSheet, making it easier for each one to stay updated without having to struggle and for miscommunication to occur more frequently. Lastly, in terms of research, nurse informaticists can assume the role of critically analyzing the data of research, ensuring that the data and results of it are factual.

Aside from organizing EHRs, nurse informaticists do software engineering and machine learning, as well as analytics and the creation of workflow strategies (Regis College, n.d.). Basically, they use information and their judgement to make improvements not only in the hospital setting, but also in education and research.

In education they coordinate and collaborate with nurse educators to provide the best education possible for students. This might be through providing educators with the right tools for them to efficiently teach their students, or through optimizing the already existing tools by looking at information and identifying which aspects they need improvement in, and of course try to address such gaps.

In the nursing practice they also try to improve and/or make new information systems for the healthcare team to use that reduce strain on the workflow and improve efficiency in the delivering of care that the patient needs. They also provide training for nurses and other staff or members of the healthcare team in using different tools and technologies available to them.

Same as in research, they look at data and information and how to organize this information for conclusions to be drawn from them. They may introduce new software or means of organizing and interpreting data. Which makes the data collection to the drawing of conclusions more seamless.

Roles
To analyze the roles of nursing informaticists in nursing education, let me refer to the nursing informatics specialty components and relationships. From the DKWI model concept, Nursing informaticists play the role of integrating the knowledge from nursing research and practice. In nursing education, the educators incorporate clinical experiences in their discussion of evidence-based practices. The informaticist is responsible in the development and implementation of educational programs and solutions (American Nurses Association, 2022).

Next, informatics nurses closes the relationship between the two different disciplines - nursing practice and information technology. They ensure that the complexities of data from informatics are organized and relevant to the clinical nursing practice. Moreover, they can be the innovators of information systems to better cater the interest of the users and improve patient health outcomes (American Nurses Association, 2022).

Finally, through the access of a large data (from information systems), informatics nurses have the capability of discovering new knowledge from patterns in the data and to discern the significance and application of the knowledge; thus, informatics nurses use technology in treating data and information to produce relevant research-based solutions in the healthcare institutions(American Nurses Association, 2022).

Nurse informaticists serve integral roles across the three mentioned domains. In nursing education, nurse informaticists design and deliver training on healthcare technologies and applications. One example is participating in initiatives like the TIGER Initiative in 2006. They also collaborate with educational institutions to implement new systems and improve the use of existing tools to equip students to adopt modern healthcare practices.

NIs assume the roles of system implementation, data analysis, training healthcare providers on new technologies in clinical practice, all these to optimize workflows and ensure patient safety.

In nursing research, nurse informaticists apply data management and information technology approaches to enhance patient care practices. They analyze large sets of health data, which informs best practices and contributes to advancements in nursing knowledge. Their involvement in research not only supports evidence-based practices but also guides future innovations in nursing.

A nursing informaticist's primary responsibility in the field of education is teaching. Her role's specifics, however, are determined by his or her position. One of the responsibilities of a higher-level nurse informaticist would be to design or construct the program or curriculum in informatics. In contrast, the primary responsibility of entry-level nurse informaticists is to train and educate healthcare personnel on the use of healthcare information systems. This includes instructing them on how to chart, analyze, and report on these processes. Moreover, to help students develop their skills, he or she may also assist in teaching them how to use online learning environments and clinical simulation activities.

In terms of clinical practice, a nurse informaticist's work takes place outside of the bedside rather than directly involving patient care. Here, their responsibilities center on data analysis to ascertain whether the technology enhances patient outcomes. They also employ innovative patient care technology to ensure patient and facility safety. But because they work with sensitive patient data, part of their scope of work is to protect that information and make sure it is kept as secure as possible.

For the purpose of nursing research, nursing informaticists help with data management, building databases such as CINAHL, and identifying patterns in vast amounts of data. In addition, they make sure that all data are accurate and validated prior to publication in order to guarantee that the findings are evidence-based and improve patient outcomes.
