The use of online simulations has been very useful in nursing education, especially during the pandemic wherein the academia was forced to use virtual means to enrich the clinical knowledge of students. This not only limits the risks of student exposure to diseases, but it also ensures that students learn with zero harmful implications to their patients through the use of clinical simulations.
The nursing practice also benefits from the use of electronic health records. This minimizes the time used to physically transfer data across different health sectors and maximizes it by allowing patient information gathered from different healthcare staff to be accessed easily so that nursing assessments and interventions can be accurately and efficiently done with coordination among health systems.
Finally, data analysis for nursing research is supported through available electronic databases and literature. An example of this would be CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) which can be used to access and review current nursing journals that would aid in finding or creating evidence-based practices that can be used to ameliorate patient outcomes and nursing profession.

You're on point, ate Meliza! The examples you have provided strongly reflect how the concept of nursing informatics have been applied in various fields. In terms of education, I do agree that online simulations have been a great alternative in forming the foundations and competencies of a nurse during the time of the pandemic. We can see here the desire of both the professors and the students to make ends meet and not compromise the quality of care that a patient can receive. As per the nursing practice, it has also been very evident how EMRs are now employed in various hospitals here in the Philippines. Personally, it helped me refine my interventions and minimize errors during our clincals in second year. Ultimately, in your final statement, I can also recall the database you mentioned because it was introduced to us by our OrComm 111 professor and it has really made us resort to evidence-based practices always. Great examples!

Examples of applications of NI

In nursing education, informatics is essential for managing and delivering educational experiences. For instance, many nursing programs now incorporate simulation-based learning environments that use informatics technologies to create realistic clinical scenarios. These simulations help nursing students develop critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills by interacting with electronic health records (EHRs), computerized provider order entry (CPOE) systems, and other digital tools they will encounter in practice. This integration of technology ensures that future nurses are prepared for the digital healthcare environment.

In nursing practice, informatics is applied in several ways to enhance patient care. One example is the use of computerized provider order entry (CPOE), which allows healthcare providers to enter medical orders electronically. Nurses use this system to access accurate, up-to-date patient information quickly, improving workflow efficiency and communication among the healthcare team. This technology significantly reduces errors and ensures timely patient care, directly influencing patient outcomes.

In nursing research, informatics enables the collection and analysis of large amounts of health data, which can be used to identify trends, improve patient care, and support evidence-based practice. Machine learning, a form of artificial intelligence, helps analyze this data, identifying patterns that might not be immediately evident to researchers. These insights can then guide clinical guidelines and best practices, improving care delivery across healthcare settings.

With the tempo of change significantly increasing, the medium through which technological advancements have remodeled how the nursing profession is learned, practiced, and innovated has fundamentally influenced how it is delivered.

In nursing education, clinical simulations have greatly contributed to equipping nurses with the competencies to handle patients that are well or ill. Various institutions in the Philippines now incorporate the use of softwares and mannequins to make the learning process more in-depth. In the case of UP College of Nursing, Bates’ Visual Guide is provided as a visual instructional tool to students to guide them in physical examination and mastering necessary skills needed in the clinical area. More so, mannequins like Sam and Lucina have also been incorporated in the process of learning, which provided students with hands-on experience through mimicking a realistic environment and a specific condition of a patient. Therefore, bridging the gap between theory and clinicals.

As for nursing practice, traditional methods of the delivery of healthcare have now been made effective and efficient through the use of technology. As seen in the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), the use of electronic health records have now been established (i.e. RADISH and OCRA). The use of such platforms have improved the documentation of patient information, minimized medical errors, and enhanced the overall quality of patient health outcomes. All the more, PGH now practices telemedicine which expands a patient’s access to healthcare.

Ultimately, in nursing research, databases such as Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and OpenAthens have also been granted to students of the University of the Philippines Manila to have easy access to medical-related journals and articles, in which most of the up-to-date findings can be found.

In nursing education, informatics can be used to develop simulation-based training programs, virtual reality experiences, and online learning platforms to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. For instance, my friend studying at the University of Navarre in Spain showed me that they have a simulation lab where their professors control the mannequin from the outside and can simulate real-time patient reactions for them to practice, just like the college’s mannequin, Lucina, but a little more technologically advanced.

Whereas in nursing practice, informatics improves patient care and outcomes. Examples include electronic health records (EHRs), computerized provider order entry (CPOE) systems, and clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) to enhance patient safety and quality of care. Additionally, informatics is used in care coordination, patient engagement, and population health management. Like in PGH, informatics allows nurses to access patient portals that provide medical records, doctor’s orders, and test results with a click.

Finally, informatics analyzes large datasets in nursing research, identifies trends and patterns, and develops predictive models to improve healthcare outcomes. For example, researchers can use machine learning algorithms to analyze EHR data and identify high-risk patients for targeted interventions. We also learn in our statistics and probability classes that using different methodologies and formulas can all be done using different statistical sites, allowing a more accurate representation of results and lesser chances of errors.

Technology now plays a huge role in nursing education, practice, and research which further strengthens the essence of nursing informatics. Being able to optimize technology and informatics can enhance critical thinking and critical decision-making in delivering patient care.

Nursing informatics can contribute to educational strategies through the use of E-simulations. This is innovative as this can also be used in distance learning if the need arises. Virtual clinical simulations help further in making the nursing students be more prepared prior to an actual clinical duty. Electronic health records (EHR), for instance, can aid nursing education as well by allowing students to document patient information real-time. This also allows students to view vital information needed for their assessment in their patient that can also improve their patient care delivery and promote safe nursing care in doing so. In the local context as a nursing student in the University of the Philippines Manila College of Nursing, the use of RADISH is an example of this aspect in the application of nursing informatics. This is not only applicable to nursing education but also to nursing practice.

Nursing informatics can also nurture nursing research by allowing and establishing collaborations to conduct timely relevant studies that can provide new knowledge for the field as exemplified by the study of Dowding et al. (2024) entitled Navigating the Global Landscape of Nursing Informatics Research Collaboration: A Blueprint for Success. In Innovation in Applied Nursing Informatics wherein a collaboration was made to collate nursing experiences regarding technology use and transformation.

Hence, incorporating informatics can improve the education of nursing students in preparation for clinical duties. Informatics can also help the faculty staff in delivering vital simulations and topic outcomes in providing nursing care. Additionally, informatics can also help in nursing research by providing timely clinical information.

In nursing education, nursing informatics is very evident because we are now in the digital world, which has led to the further integration of technology into learning. For example, the use of online simulations prepares students for clinical duty, and artificial human models controlled by computers are used for laboratory activities, allowing nursing students to better visualize how to care for patients with specific conditions.

In nursing practice, one of the best examples I can give is based on my own experience during my N13 OPD duty, where we were shown how to monitor the number of patients coming in that day, their status, and which room they would enter. According to the head nurse of the OPD Ob-Gyne, it has become easier for nurses, physicians, and other staff to communicate about the status of their patients just by monitoring the spreadsheet they created.
In health centers, the lines for health services they offer have become faster through online registration.

As for nursing research, there are now more reliable sources related to nursing practice. Through nursing informatics, nursing practice is now more dependent on evidence-based practices gathered from the research being conducted.

In nursing education, online simulations allowed educators and learners to navigate to the new challenges presented by the pandemic. The benefit of these simulations also transpired and created a new way of learning. For example, Bates’ Visual Guide provides students to learn comprehensive assessment even in their respective houses. I was able to utilize this source of information, which helped me get through the our OSCE during the first year. Moreover, with the use of a childbirth simulator, like Lucina, allowed us to practice before our actual field.

In nursing practice, the convenience of having an electronic health record, like Radish, allows different professionals to have an updated plan of care and assessments of patients, which cna be accessed anywhere. With this, it was easy for us to verify orders and see valuable information that will ensure a patient-centered care. This improves health outcomes, while decreasing the risk for errors. In fact, Trout et al. (2021), as cited in Regis College (2023), stated that there was an 18% decrease in mortality for hospital who uses EHR.

In nursing research, different databases allows access to up to date knowledge about nursing profession. Moreover, a more organized data storage from hospitals, researchers can benefit from this by being able to access a large amount of data, in a more efficient way, that can be used to expand the knowledge regarding patient care.

Nursing informatics (NI), as in the expanded definition of the Council of Computer Applications in Nursing of the ANA, indulges itself in the fields of nursing science, computer science, and information science, which is heavily intertwined with research, innovation, and the academe. In nursing education, NI is evidently seen in the student nurses’ utilization of computer applications to accomplish, record, and evaluate patient-related documents (i.e., Diagnostic and Laboratory Studies, NCPs, Medication Management Plans), such as Google Docs and Sheets. Furthermore, student nurses and faculty members in the college have been utilizing SAM and LUCINA, as part of our college’s premier technological facilities, to simulate interventions and patient-nurse interactions before we proceed with our actual clinical immersion.

As for the nursing practice itself, in the PGH, doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals working within wards can access patient databases, information, and files through the RADISH platform, which provides thorough convenience, most especially for cases that require collaborative interventions within professionals and departments. With the ease of access allowed by the provision of the RADISH platform that has been established since 2018, Dr. Jose Rafael Marfori expresses that the homegrown platform has assisted the hospital to become “more advanced frontiers” in the pursuit of protecting the health of all its patients (2022). In nursing research, on the other hand, with the growth of AI, NI continues to explore the possibilities of utilizing this technology to improve evidence-based practices that are focused on building applications to further assist healthcare systems as of today (University of England, 2021).

With the current embrace of the field on broadening the knowledge and usage of NI, we see a brighter future, not only for its actual subspecialty in the practice but more importantly, for the betterment of the welfare of our patients.

Nursing informatics (NI) has various applications across nursing education, practice, and research, significantly enhancing the field.

Nursing Education:
In education, NI leverages tools like e-learning platforms, online tutorials, and virtual classrooms, such as the UP Manila Virtual Learning Environment (UPMVLE). These platforms became essential during the COVID-19 pandemic when online learning dominated, especially for delivering theoretical instruction. In addition, nurse-patient interactions can be simulated through simulation labs, allowing students to practice clinical scenarios in a safe, controlled environment. This combination of theoretical and practical training through informatics tools prepares students for real-world challenges.

Nursing Practice:
In practice, NI supports decision-making and patient care through systems like electronic health records (EHRs). For example, the Philippine General Hospital’s RADISH system alerts nurses about the urgent care interventions as collaborated with other healthcare team members. By documenting patient data, monitoring progress, and providing evidence-based recommendations, EHRs reduce errors, enhance communication, and improve patient safety. This streamlining of clinical workflows through informatics ensures better outcomes and more efficient care.

Nursing Research:
In research, databases and statistical software allow nurse-researchers to analyze health outcomes and nursing interventions. Collaborative platforms, including electronic journals (CINAHL & OpenAthens), help share findings globally. These tools accelerate the translation of research into practice, ensuring that the latest evidence-based practices are integrated into patient care.

In terms of nursing education, an example of the application of nursing informatics is through the use of technology for different simulation activities to enhance student learning and prepare us extensively for what we would experience in the clinical area. In UPCN, we were able to utilize mannequins such as Sam and Lucina, which were of significant help to apply what we learned in the theoreticals.

Carlow University (2021) discussed how electronic health records (EHRs) allow for a more extensive management of patient information that would foster patient-focused and coordinated care among healthcare professionals. During our clinical duties in PGH, we were able to witness the use of RADISH and OCRA, which were vital in storing patient information, laboratory results, doctor orders, etc. in an organized manner. Through these platforms, the process of analyzing and inputting data about patients is facilitated in a more effective manner that would ensure the provision of the quality care needed by our patients.

Lastly, nursing informatics significantly contributes to the advancement of research through the use of research and evidence-based practice in the nursing profession, which could improve overall patient and health outcomes. Databases such as Cumulated Index to Nursing Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and Open Athens are helpful in terms of viewing published studies highlighting practices and knowledge that are evidence-based, and could be applied in various healthcare settings.

NURSING EDUCATION

In nursing education, nursing informatics allows the collection of data which may be used to accurately simulate the situations and circumstances in real patient cases. Advancements in technology such as robots that simulate specific cases and virtual laboratories are some examples of how nursing informatics is used in the modern age to prepare soon to be healthcare professionals.

NURSING PRACTICE

Most hospitals now use Electronic Health Records (EHR) as a way to organize patient data efficiently. Having the medical history of a patient and being able to update it often allows efficient communication between healthcare professionals and may reduce risk of errors.

NURSING RESEARCH

The large pool of data usually collected in nursing research will be hard to sort out manually. Nursing informatics allows researchers to efficiently recognize patterns in patient care. Databases also allow these published researches to be quickly accessible to everyone. Being knowledgeable in nursing informatics may also promote the anonymity of patients joining a study by assigning codes instead of using sensitive information to identify patient cases.

With the combination of nursing, computer science, and information technology, a discipline of nursing informatics emerged (Mielke, 2024). This discipline aims to improve nursing education, practice, and research by using computers and electronic tools for better patient care, improved decision-making, and increased efficiency of healthcare providers.

In nursing education, using visual guides, such as Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination, has helped a lot in the discipline. The Bates’ Visual Guide was a nursing informatics tool that provides data and improves the education of student nurses. Incorporating the data online was not new to us since we came from a 2-year online class during our Senior High School. With that, we were able to adapt well to the system of online learning.

Meanwhile, the Electronic Health Records under the nursing practice helps in identifying, collecting, processing, and managing data and information. During the OPD-ObGyne rotation we did during our N13 clinical duty, we were able to view the EHR of the ward. PGH also used the Computerized Registry of Admissions and Discharges Information Management Systems (RADISH) to store patient information. This includes the health history, doctors’ orders, nursing interventions, and other notes that healthcare providers should be aware of. I was able to understand how nursing informatics helps a lot in organizing and making a system within the ward for a better quality of care that each patient deserves.

For nursing research, people now use online platforms to conduct their research. Though with the problems regarding security and privacy of the people, nursing research has been proactive in making it a safe space for everyone to respond to. Forms were answered so that different disciplines under the nursing research would be able to improve and focus their care on the patient’s well-being.

I agree with your answers Erika. I remember frequently referring to Bates' Visual Guide online when I felt so lost in learning physical assessment during the pandemic, which I think is one way NI tools enhance nursing outcomes starting in our training and education. NI, leveraging on online tools, also helped increase the reach of data gathering in Nursing research which hopefully provides variation in our data sources.

Nursing informatics is a crucial aspect in enhancing healthcare delivery systems and patient outcomes. Nowadays, it has increasingly been integrated into nursing education. Especially in the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, nursing schools have adapted clinical simulations in place of face-to-face ones. One example is the use of the Bates’ Visual Guide in our Nursing 8. Also, in our Nursing 11, there is a clinical simulation website with details of hypothetical patients to prepare us for the upcoming hospital duty. Moreover, the use of mannequins like SAM and Lucina allowed us to practice nursing skills, as they mimic real-life situations.

In nursing practice, the use of electronic health records is evidently seen in the Philippine General Hospital through RADISH and the OCRA. These systems consolidate patient information and treatment plans. They also result in enhanced data access and communication across healthcare professionals for collaboration of care (Carlow University, 2021).

Lastly, applications of nursing informatics in nursing research lies with the improvement and utilization of evidence-based practice. As such, it is used in the design, development and implementation of health tools and models. Consequently, access to databases like the Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and OpenAthens have also been included in the resources of UP Manila students and faculty, which can be used for further studies and applied to healthcare deliveries.

Nursing informatics plays a significant role in education, practice, and research. With the integration of technology, these areas of nursing are improved. An example is the use of LMS in nursing education, such as our VLE and Canvas. Because of these platforms, we can have a repository of our submissions as well as review handouts uploaded by our professors. In nursing practice, informatics is used to enhance patient care, coordinate data, and store the patient’s information easily through the use of electronic health records, such as PGH’s RADISH and OCRA. Lastly, in nursing research, an application of nursing informatics is the use of excel to organize, analyze, and present data so that researchers can easily make edits, draw their conclusions, and communicate their findings to the target population.

Various technologies have emerged that have been substantially beneficial to nursing education. Some examples include virtual and augmented reality training that have been found to enhance learning in nursing education (Booth et al., 2021). In our context, experience with the simulator, Lucina, is an accurate example of the application of nursing informatics to education.

Documentation, a vital aspect of nursing practice, involves searching, monitoring, and careful recording of patient data and nursing interventions provided. Timely and accurate documentation is made more efficient and accurate through the application of nursing informatics, as electronic medical records have become more accessible. Moreover, the increasing popularity of telehealth services is another application of nursing informatics, that is greatly beneficial as it bridges patient and professional despite difficult situations such as outbreaks of infectious diseases (Booth et al., 2021).

Improvement of health information and nursing management for the purpose of bettering the lives of people constitutes nursing research. Nursing informatics makes up a great portion of this as interpretation, planning, and development are included in information skills thereby making informatics an integral part of nursing research.

According to a post made by the University of England, nursing informatics can be applied to many apects of the career. I would like to emphasize its impact on how nurses act according to the information they are able to receive. With the data and knowledge that they have access to, they can act in more ways that can benefit the patient. Let's say, for example, the difference between the nurses in the past who were not yet privy to aseptic techniques or hygiene practices. The difference in the care given to patients from nurses who are aware of these techniques because of the dissemination of information is relevant and a key factor in promoting patient health.

Nursing informatics is integrated into nursing education through simulation-based pedagogic techniques. During the pandemic, online simulations allowed students to perform in a simulated environment where they can practice their clinical decision-making skills despite the limitations on in-person clinical experiences. Today, our college utilizes high-fidelity mannequins to replicate real-world clinical settings, ensuring that students are better prepared for hands-on patient care. Additionally, the use of various online platforms that aid in student-professor communication and consolidation of patient information are also encouraged.

The application of nursing informatics in nursing practice is seen in electronic charting/health records which allows collaboration between different healthcare professionals as it provides them access to real-time updated patient information. This reduces risk for errors, promotes time management, and enhances communication among everyone involved.

In nursing research, nursing informatics enables data organization and analysis through computer-based programs. These programs aid in identifying trends and contributing to recommendations of new evidence-based practices.

The pace of technology in the 21st century truly is remarkable and limitless. Its effect towards numerous fields of practice, including healthcare, enabled a more comprehensive and radical application towards clinical care. As defined, nursing informatics is an interdisciplinary practice that combines nursing, computer science, and information technology as it uses technology and data management systems in optimizing the delivery of healthcare services in concomitant to supporting nurses with their daily clinical practices (Mielke, 2023).

Nursing informatics uses information and technology to support and enhance safe, effective, and quality nursing care. It aims to accomplish this goal by leveraging highly trained healthcare professionals that are not just knowledgeable with the theories and concepts but who are also competent with the application of technology and other resources vital for the effective and efficient practice of nursing care. Some of the notable applications of nursing informatics are telehealth and telemedicine. It has been one of the major breakthroughs in healthcare, most especially when it has been an alternative way of healthcare service during the pandemic. It makes use of nursing informatics to encompass several services of patients in the comforts of their home. It included services like remote monitoring, patient education and teaching, and virtual consultations. Moreover, it also focused on clinical diagnosis and treatment that expanded healthcare access to homebound individuals and those in either remote, farflung, or underserved areas. Another application is the rise of wearable technologies and remote patient monitoring paraphernalias. This utilizes devices and sensors that collect and transmit a patient's health data even without physical contact or primary interventions done with the patient as it sends data to their provider for remote monitoring and analysis. Not only does this help in monitoring but it also enables continuous tracking of viral signs, activity levels, and other health-related information that is deemed necessary for the patient’s health.

Nursing informatics can be applied in nursing education through online laboratory simulation that imitates nurse-patient interactions with other healthcare providers. For instance, in our previously acquired course, MicroBio for Nursing, we were given an online activity through "Labster," wherein the platform imitated the process of urinalysis, urine culture, and complete blood count, which allowed us to visualize the process and at the same time assess our knowledge. On the other hand, nursing informatics may be seen in the nursing practice through RADISH in PGH, wherein patient information is managed through a system, allowing each healthcare provider to communicate significant data regarding the patient and their corresponding duties. In nursing research, nursing informatics is applied through data analytic tools like Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) to analyze large datasets and subsequently improve patient outcomes. Researchers often utilize this tool to look for patterns and trends in patient data, such as the efficiency of particular interventions or the prevalence of specific illnesses. For example, reviewing data from different institutions may uncover patterns in how specific therapies affect patient recovery durations, leading to evidence-based practice improvements. Therefore, it is evident that nursing informatics is widely interdisciplinary in nursing, either in education, practice, or research.

In nursing education, informatics enhances patient safety, clinical decision-making, and care quality by integrating technology into curricula. It develops students' competencies in handling digital tools for documentation and accessing real-time information. For example, a study at Columbia University School of Nursing implemented a two-pronged approach: utilizing personal digital assistants (PDAs) for documenting clinical encounters and retrieving patient safety data, alongside improving the informatics skills of students and faculty (Bakken et al., 2004). This approach highlights how informatics can be used to promote safety and improve outcomes in healthcare education.

In nursing practice, informatics plays a crucial role in integrating technology to improve patient care, streamline workflows, and enhance communication. It enables nurses to utilize tools like electronic health records, mobile devices, and telehealth to provide timely, accurate care. For example, as healthcare embraces wireless solutions, virtual visits, and patient portals, nurses who understand both the complexities of healthcare and the effective use of technology are essential (Sensmeiser, 2011). They ensure the seamless exchange of data across systems, promoting continuous care, health maintenance, and patient safety, while also contributing to better outcomes through data-driven insights.

In nursing research, informatics helps identify emerging trends and priorities by analyzing large-scale data. For example, an international survey identified future research areas like big data science, clinical decision support, and patient safety. Through data collection and analysis, informatics guides research that enhances clinical practices and healthcare outcomes (Peltonen et al., 2016). This approach aids in identifying new areas for investigation and improving the effectiveness of care across different healthcare settings globally.

Nursing informatics has provided some invaluable benefits to the nursing field. For nursing education, we use applications or websites that aid students in learning. One example of this is the Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination. This website was used during our N8: Basic Health Assessment. It provided interactive elements and simulations so that students would better learn how to assess a patient. Also, another example would be using robots for learning, such as Lucina which simulates the situation of labor and delivery. These applications aided students in enhancing their learning experience.

As for nursing practice, we use different kind of technological innovations when we give patient care. For example, we use electrocardiogram (ECG) machines, infusion pumps, and other machines to monitor and treat our patients. In addition, in PGH, we use the Online Consultation Request and Appointment (OCRA) System to access patient records and verify information. In this way, we can streamline all information and give appropriate and timely care to our patients.

Lastly, for nursing research, we use different applications in the research process. For data collection, we may opt to use Google Forms or other surveying platforms. For data analysis, we use Microsoft Excel or RStudio to generate trends from our data. These applications support evidence-based practice that enhances the quality of care that nurses give to the patients.

The use of nursing informatics became increasingly prominent, especially during the recent pandemic.

In nursing education, online learning platforms emerged as the primary means of maintaining interactive education. Many nursing schools, including ours, adopted these platforms to deliver course content, simulations, and clinical experiences. These platforms offered students access to a wealth of educational resources and facilitated flexible learning.

In nursing practice, telehealth technologies allowed nurses to provide care to patients remotely, expanding healthcare access. This service was particularly helpful during the pandemic's limitations, when hospitals faced decreased capacity and some individuals struggled to obtain necessary care.

In research, nursing informatics tools proved invaluable for collecting, managing, and analyzing large datasets. This reduced the risk of information errors and streamlined the entire data collection process.

Nursing informatics paved the way for an advanced nursing education. From a traditional mode of learning, where students had to access different kinds of printed textbooks and materials to learn, we now have digital sources where nursing students can access everything they need for their education with just a single tap or click. One application of nursing informatics that has impacted my education is our college's high-fidelity mannequins. SAM and LUCINA are two of our college's high-fidelity mannequins that can perform human body functions. SAM allowed me to practice my skills in auscultation and differentiating different breath and heart sounds. On the other hand, LUCINA allowed me to perform the whole process of delivering a baby, which helped me a lot when I was completing my delivery room cases. These innovations elevate our skills as student nurses and better prepare us for what we will encounter in the clinical setting (Solnick & Weiss, 2007).

On the other hand, nursing informatics has helped nursing practice by ensuring that every medication is thoroughly checked and administered. Through the electronic medication administration record, nurses can keep track of the medicines taken by every patient and make sure that the correct dose is given at the right time (Benson, 2024). In PGH, the e-MAR is part of RADISH, wherein nurses can easily update patients' medication records and share them with other healthcare team members.

The impact of nursing informatics is also evident in nursing research since it has made research journals accessible to the public. Journals like CINAHL can now be accessed anytime, which makes it a lot easier for us student nurses to browse through breakthroughs and current updates in the nursing field (Witherspoon, 2014). It also allows us to see research gaps and conduct studies to address those.

During and after the pandemic, the use of technology in nursing education and care has significantly increased. Virtual Learning Education (VLE) became the main platform for universities, replacing face-to-face clinical experiences with online activities. Many hospitals now use platforms to input and manage patient data, while nursing research has advanced with the use of data analytics software and other tools.

In nursing education, nursing informatics is applied through simulation-based practices that replicate real-life scenarios, along with applications that provide 3D visualizations to enhance students' learning. Moreover, with our exposure to the clinical setting of PGH, we were also trained to utilize the Electronic Health Records of the hospital, making our learning well-rounded.

In nursing practice, nursing informatics is utilized through Electronic Health Records (EHRs) such as RADISH (Computerized Registry of Admissions and Discharges) and OCRA (Online Consultation Request and Appointment System), where healthcare providers input and access patient information, and where patients can schedule appointments with their physicians, respectively. These platforms, used in PGH, streamline patient data management and improve the efficiency of delivering high-quality care.

In nursing research, data analytics software, such as excel and python, are utilized to support the research process. These tools assist with data collection and analysis, helping researchers identify patterns and trends within their data.

Given the rapid advancement of technology, it is essential for nurses to adapt to these changes to deliver high-quality care that meets patients' needs effectively.

Nurse informaticists are vital across education, practice, and research. They leverage technology to develop new workflows, guide the implementation of new systems, and assess data quality, thereby enhancing the chances of optimal care delivery.

Integrating nursing knowledge with technology aims to manage and unify health information effectively. The primary goal of nursing informatics is to enhance the health of individuals and communities while simultaneously reducing healthcare costs. An example of this is the use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) in the OPD OB-GYNE Department. By having these records, complete patient history readily available, the need for repeat tests is minimized.

According to Park & Park, 2022, it improves decision-making across both direct and indirect nursing roles by leveraging standardized data through its collection, extraction, aggregation, analysis, and interpretation. This process utilizes advanced data science principles and techniques to support informed and effective clinical and administrative decisions.

Nursing informatics is involved in developing technologies for use in various areas of nursing.

In nursing education, the use of teaching technologies has allowed for the evolution of how nursing is taught in the classroom. Aside from traditional “by-the-book” studying, there are now simulation machines that allow for students to get a glimpse of true-to-life patient care (American Nurses Association, 2022). One example that we’ve experienced in the college would be childbirth stimulation with Lucina.

In nursing practice, electronic health record systems have become more commonplace, such as the use of OCRA and RADISH in PGH. These systems allow for more seamless communication amongst the members of the healthcare team and are helpful in providing patient-centered care while preventing possible errors.

In nursing research, informatics plays a role in improving nursing care through their data, such as looking into patient outcomes as a result of certain nursing interventions (American Nurses Association, 2022). In this way, the data can be used to improve standards of nursing care.

Nursing informatics in education: Nurses and nursing students are influenced by nursing informatics through educating them in how to organize data, utilizing information and knowledge, and using wisdom to deliver health service.

Nursing informatics in practice: In obtaining data through the interaction between the nurse and client, the nurse is able to communicate with other healthcare professionals in ensuring an efficient and effective plan of care to the client. This collaborative approach ensures that information is optimized, care is managed, and that there is a shared model between other healthcare professionals.

Nursing informatics in research: Information obtained is collected and organized properly. After this, nurses would analyze its trends and from there on a clinical decision will be made with the foundation of evidence-based practices.

According to the American Nurses Association (2023), nursing informatics integrates various fields, specifically nursing science, information technology, and computer science, to manage, communicate, and disseminate information across the scope of nursing practice. It is a field that has evolved and has been integrated into the forefront of patient management and care.

To make the use of nursing informatics in our profession more tangible, two examples of its application in the field of nursing education and nursing practice are the use of simulation-based learning and electronic health records, both of which are commonly implemented in different nursing institutions in the country. Like our practice in UPCN, virtual and mannequin-based simulations are used to practice laboratory skills in preparation for the actual procedures that would be done once students are assigned to the bedside in the teaching hospitals. These simulations mimic actual medical situations or procedures to let students practice skills in a safe and controlled environment with the guidance of their clinical instructors. In addition to this, simulation through electronic health records enables the students to practice documenting patient care and procedures, which is a crucial part of patient care when it comes to clinical duties and rotations.

In nursing research, informatics may be used to analyze datasets when it comes to studies whose main goal is to evaluate specific human responses to certain diseases or conditions. To cite, analytics may be used to identify different patterns and differences in patients' responses to certain care given in evaluation of the latter's effectiveness and efficacy.

The use of information technology cannot go unnoticed since it has made the role of healthcare personnel, notably nurses, much easier and more accessible than before. Various methods were used in education, including e-learning in course management systems and virtual classrooms like VLE or the Zoom app for virtual meetings. Assisted simulated clinical experiences were also used during asynchronous sessions to maximize learning at home (Uslu et al., 2015). In practice, nurses employ electronic health records such as RADISH at PGH. PGH also uses the Online Consultation Request and Appointment (OCRA) System to reduce traffic in the walk-in patient queue. In some hospitals, software, and technology enable nurses to control the dosages and drips administered to patients via automated IV pumps. This reduces human error and allows nurses to focus on other areas of work in the hospital (Western Governors University, 2021). For research, nursing informatics also enables nurses to look for public health trends in their communities that can be used to promote healthcare activities. For example, the Microsoft Excel program might be used to store data and numbers necessary for the community setup. Nurses could utilize informatics to track illness outbreaks and provide more targeted and quality patient treatment while relying on evidence-based decision-making.

In nursing education, nursing informatics can be applied through the technological tools that promote efficient learning and competency among students. Some of the most significant areas in which nursing informatics is applied is through e-learning, online platforms, and simulation. These tools allow nursing students to access course materials, engage in virtual classrooms, collaborate with other students, participate in online tutorials such as those on YouTube and other informative websites, and simulate clinical experiences using mannequins like SAM and Lucina during lab sessions, which all enhance learning flexibility.

In nursing practice, nursing informatics is particularly applied in data management. During our clinical duty at PGH, we learned that patient data is documented and stored through electronic health records (EHR), which have contributes to the accuracy, efficiency, and overall convenience of healthcare delivery. For instance, at PGH, the Computerized Registry of Admissions and Discharges (RADISH) and the Online Consultation Request and Appointment System (OCRA) are utilized, both of which facilitate a more efficient retrieval of patient information and reduce delays in patient care.

Moreover, nursing informatics also has a significant role in nursing research. This is utilized in the development of research, specifically in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data. For example, technological tools like statistical software programs can help in analyzing patient outcomes, which may lead to the discovery of new potential treatment options, the identification of cause or risk factors of diseases, and many other aspects in healthcare.

Focusing more on my clinical exposure to nursing informatics, some of the applications of nursing informatics are in terms of the appointment system in PGH, specifically in the usage of the OCRA system. One problem I noticed is the gaps observed in the patient’s perspective such as the fact that it is hard for the patients to use this system due to various factors like digital illiteracy, lack of electronic devices, and other needs like internet connectivity. With that, nursing informatics could be applied through the following:

Nursing Education: Aside from teaching the nurses how to efficiently use the system, it is crucial for them to properly teach their patients how to schedule an appointment, how to keep track of the schedule, the information that their patients can access with this, and much more.

Nursing Practice: Overall, NI can help in ensuring the smooth flow of care from the appointment, up to the discharge or referral needed. Additionally, NI could provide ways that will help to improve help education to the patients, and in reiterating the care needed per patient.

Nursing Research: Research plays an important role in this issue. NIs could help in identifying the other problems that hinder the effectiveness of this system, in terms of the nurse and the patient’s perspectives. From this, they could improve the interface more, whereas the patients can be notified through text message of the date and time of their appointment, keep track of the queue so that they don’t need to go early for their appointments, schedule efficiently of the re-scheduling, and much more. By doing this, not only it could significantly help the patients, but also lifts the burden from the side of the nurses with the overwhelming number of patients that cannot be accommodated the same day.

In basic terms, nursing informatics is the use of any technological means while applying it in nursing education, practice, and research. There are actually several practices that are an example of applying nursing informatics that we often did not know were a part of. For instance, in terms of nursing education, the usage of simulations during laboratory sessions such as utilizing SAM for any cardio-respiratory related topic and Lucina for delivering a baby. With the use of this, we are able to hone our skills with regard to the topics that these address. In terms of nursing practice, telecommunication is an example of this. Telecommunication makes it more convenient for the patient to book a consultation with healthworkers without having to deal with the struggle of long lines. Another example is how patients can easily access their medical health records digitally. Lastly, for the nursing research aspect, an example is related to clinical trials. Surveys can be easily disseminated to a wider audience. In connection with this, data can now be easily stored, accessed, and organized with the assistance of technology.

The progress of nursing informatics by leaps and bounds has truly helped the modernization of nursing education, nursing practice, and nursing research, where various applications could be seen.

Through nursing informatics, technology has been accentuating the efficiency of nursing education (INSCOL, 2023). The American Nurse Journal as cited by Cpatete (2024), has discussed the integration of simulation technology in classrooms to create a learning environment that focuses on students’ critical thinking and fosters a stronger relationship between the students’ theoretical abilities and the practical setting. This exemplifies the impact of nursing informatics on education where education is enhanced through technology and accessibility in order to upgrade the competencies of student nurses.

Going beyond the classroom, nursing informatics has also proven its role in the nursing practice as there are various innovations created that we utilize in providing patient-centered care. For instance, the transition from paper-based health records to centralized electronic health records has increased the efficiency of nursing practice, reduced its cost, and enhanced the lives of patients (American Nurse, 2023). Another application would be the innovation of telemedicine and teleconsultation, where health services provided became more accessible through the use of telehealth technologies. With this, remote monitoring, health education, and medical consultation have been brought to the homes of the people, especially in remote areas (Chu et al., 2021).

Lastly, nursing informatics also advances medical research where evidence-based practices are discovered and analyzed (Carlow University Online, 2022). Through nursing informatics, patient data from different platforms could be synthesized, interpreted, and analyzed to study different healthcare delivery methodologies, which impacts the nursing field holistically. Moreover, this also overlaps with nursing education and nursing practice as the data would yield information that would be necessary for substantial clinical decision-making for patient welfare Cpatete (2024b).

An example of nursing informatics in nursing education is the use of virtual simulation platforms such as the Labster program. This platform simulates laboratory activities and provides interactive learning even at home, allowing students to access educational content remotely and learn conveniently. Then, in nursing practice and research, the use of nursing informatics is also evident. For example, Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), such as those implemented at the Philippine General Hospital through the RADISH system, enable nurses and healthcare practitioners to maintain comprehensive digital records of patient histories. Additionally, telehealth and telemedicine, which gained prominence during the pandemic, improve access to care by eliminating geographic barriers and offering continuous monitoring and follow-up. This technology allows nurses and other healthcare providers to connect with patients remotely, manage healthcare capacity effectively, and reduce unnecessary hospital visits, thus improving overall continuity of care.

Nursing informatics has paved its way in various fields to strengthen the competencies of nurses, stakeholders, and patients for better patient-centered outcomes.

Firstly, nursing informatics has been integrated in nursing education. Various nursing informatics tools were developed in many institutions to strengthen the compliance of future nurses in the current healthcare systems. With virtual classroom and online tutorials for course management, Excel-guided health informatics in formal education, and personal digital assistants and electronic simulation scenarios in laboratory and clinical practices, nurse educators are able to strengthen the competencies and address the gaps of nursing education (Uslu et al., 2015).

Secondly, nursing informatics has been widely used in the nursing practice, especially in the patient documentation with electronic health records. Many countries like the United States, South Korea, and the Philippines use EHR to make patient records more accessible, structured, and safe while avoiding human errors (Luan et al., 2023). Additionally, the use of clinical decision support systems have also been adapted to assist healthcare providers in creating decisions and include patients to be active players in their care (Boyce et al., 2022).

Thirdly, nursing informatics has been integrated in nursing research to address challenges in acquiring evidence-based practice. With the skills developed on nursing informatics, particularly on appraising relevant information on electronic searches, researchers are able to integrate evidence-based practice in their fields of study and support nursing research (Sipes, 2023). Additionally, nursing informatics tools, such as Telehealth and EHRs not only support nursing practice but also data collection and analysis for research, such as those during the COVID-19 pandemic (Wu, 2021).

With these, it can be said that the applications of nursing informatics proves a great way in advancing the nursing profession to be more than what it is previously deemed to be.

In nursing education, the use of learning platforms like VLEs or Canvas is a significant application of nursing informatics. They provide a centralized learning environment for students and teachers, facilitating learning and academic interactions. These platforms can create assessments and forums from which data can be collected and analyzed.

In nursing practice, the use of electronic health records has helped bridge the gap between nursing as a practice and nursing as a science. This provides a standardized language for healthcare professionals and improves collaborative decision-making. Nursing informatics helps minimize medical errors, improve timely diagnosis and care planning, enhance communication between healthcare providers, and ultimately improve healthcare quality (Rami & Shafie, 2022).

In nursing research, data for specific research studies can be collected and analyzed using various data collection and analysis tools, such as Excel. This data can be transformed into analyses to identify trends in research results and draw conclusions.

Nursing Education - Nursing students rely on professors to teach them the fundamentals of the nursing profession. The role of a Nursing Informaticist in nursing education is to educate and guide student nurses, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to become reliable, competent professionals. Beyond providing care, these future nurses are trained to leverage technology to enhance patient outcomes and uplift their patients' spirits by delivering compassionate, informed, and holistic care.

Nursing Practice - One role of a nursing informaticist in nursing practice is educating staff on how to use technological modalities such as RADISH in PGH to better facilitate patient care and streamline workflows. This RADISH is one of the critical systems used in the hospital to manage and integrate radiology services, allowing healthcare professionals to efficiently access imaging results, coordinate care, and reduce turnaround times for diagnostic procedures.

Nursing Research - One excellent example is CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), a key research database providing access to a wide range of nursing and healthcare literature. Nurse informaticists assist researchers in efficiently navigating CINAHL to locate high-quality, evidence-based studies that support clinical practice and improve patient care outcomes.

In nursing education, nursing informatics is exemplified by tools such as Lucina, a childbirth simulator designed to replicate the childbirth experience. Lucina helps us learn about proper labor, delivery, and postpartum care in a controlled environment. Another example is Sam, a simulation manikin that allows us to listen to various heart and lung sounds. These manikins enable us to apply theoretical knowledge and analyze patient scenarios before we engage in actual clinical practice in wards and communities.

In nursing practice, PGH’s RADISH system is a key example. It records comprehensive patient data, including case numbers, medical histories, diagnoses, vital signs, lab results, and details about their physicians. Access to this data is restricted to only those physicians and nurses directly involved with the patient, ensuring privacy and security. This system greatly enhances convenience for the healthcare team, allowing them to retrieve patient information with just one click.

In nursing research, OpenAthens is a valuable resource. It provides access to a wide range of articles, journals, databases, and books that are essential for conducting research. OpenAthens helps researchers find current and relevant information to support their studies, ensuring they have access to the most pertinent data for their research projects.

In nursing education, nursing informatics paved the way for the use of simulations and virtual laboratories. This was especially helpful during the pandemic in helping the students visualize real-life situations. For instance, using Bate’s visual guide website, where the physical examination and history taking are taught virtually. Additionally, simulations like SAM, LUCINA, and JUNO are used in UPCN to enrich the educational experience of its students.

In nursing practice, telemedicine has been widely used to provide care to patients through calls, especially since the pandemic. In PGH, they expanded the use of the computerized registry of admissions and discharges (RADISH) to accommodate outpatient record-keeping. This enables the nurses, doctors, and other members of the healthcare team to collaborate better.

In nursing research, students of the University of the Philippines Manila use databases such as the Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and OpenAthens. These databases allow users to easily access medical-related journals and articles, enhancing their knowledge and creating their own research.

In an article released by Harerimana et al (2021), the application of nursing informatics may be utilized across multiple disciplines in nursing which tackled and highly emphasized its role in the three disciplines. In the same article, nursing informatics may be applied in education in the form of analytics and assessment of educational outcomes. Apart from this, it is also utilized in virtual teaching and learning.

Meanwhile, the application of nursing informatics in nursing practice is greatly associated with regards to looking for data trends and in tracking patient outcomes. With nursing informatics being centered on patient outcomes in nursing practice in the form of intervention, there are also aspects catering to nurses such as the assessment of workload.

In nursing research, the application of nursing informatics revolves around the utilization of virtual knowledge bases as well as in creating standardized terminologies. Aside from this, it is also able to support evidence-based practice and aid in the evaluation of patient outcomes similar to nursing practice.

With the advancement of technology, informatics has been an essential part in the nursing discipline. It merges healthcare with technology through tools like electronic health records, online simulations, and even access to health journals.

In nursing education, we have the various types of virtual simulations. These are provided for not just the students, but also to professionals who would want to enhance and refine their skills without the need to physically come in contact with patients at a clinical setting. In nursing practice, with the implementation of the Computerized Registry of Admission and Discharge, RADISH, nurses have been able to document each patient effectively, having an easier and real time access on the patient trends and patterns regarding their status. Lastly, in nursing research, OpenAthens is a platform that provides access to scholarly articles and journals. Overall, integrating informatics into the nursing discipline enhances the nurses’ delivery of holistic care, improving efficiency and quality of patient outcomes.

Nursing Education: A prime example of the application of nursing informatics in nursing education would be the shift to online learning methods such as the virtual classrooms of VLE, Canvas, or Google Classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic. Another would be the patient simulators that provide nursing students the ability to practice their skills in a realistic clinical setting without the fear of harming an actual patient.
Nursing Practice: In the nursing practice, the electronic health records (EHRs) of patients is an application of nursing informatics as it contains all the data of patients in a digital platform. Aside from that, wearable technologies worn by patients for remote patient monitoring is also an example, specifically the wireless fetal monitor used in OBAS to monitor multiple mothers.
Nursing Research: As for the application in nursing research, an example would be databases such as PubMed, ResearchGate, or OpenAthens that allow nurses to be updated with the latest research and to share their findings with other healthcare professionals.

Aside from the use of mannequins in the college, one example of the application of nursing informatics in our nursing education is the use of simulation-based learning platforms. In our Microbiology course last year, one of the platforms we used was the Labster, wherein we performed urinalysis. This allowed us to apply our knowledge and suggest a diagnosis, which tested our critical analysis (Urinalysis: Analyze Urine to Suggest a Diagnosis | Try Virtual Lab, n.d.). Another notable application of nursing informatics, particularly in the nursing practice is the use of electronic health records for documentation, particularly the RADISH in PGH. This allowed an efficient system wherein nurses, along with other healthcare professionals, could access patient information and data. This enhanced communication and delivery of care, as well as reduced medical errors (Carlow University, n.d.). In the field of nursing research, several databases such as EBSCO, CINAHL, PubMed, and National Institute of Nursing Research, among others are available. These databases aid nurses in accessing and evaluating evidence-based interventions and innovations, allowing them to identify the best practices in their field. Moreover, this also allows them to contribute to the existing body of knowledge, leading to improved patient outcomes and enhanced quality of care.

Nursing informatics has tools and processes which could be applied in different areas of the nursing profession. Aside from it being used in the hospital and nursing practice setting, it could also be used in education and research. Nursing informatics allow the workflow in these areas to be more efficient without sacrificing the data and evidence-driven nature of the practice.

In nursing education, nursing informatics facilitates the learning and teaching during classroom sessions or skills lab activities (Harerimana et al., 2022). This could be through the different tools they use or the different methods they would utilize in delivering nursing education to their students.

In the nursing ractice, EHRs are being utilized in patient care, which is one of the tools that nursing informatics was able to provide to make it more efficient and safe for the nurses to provide care to their patients. It integrates the knowledge of the nurse with tools and technology to aid in their practice. According to ANA Nursing Resources Hub (2023), ANA (2013) describes that “this data approach to patient care enhances the clinical experience for health care providers and patients.”

Lastly for research, same with the rest, this deals with data that needs tools for them to be organized and used efficiently. Nursing informatics help with processing that data and draw conclusions and information from that data, which are valuable and important in the improvement of the nursing practice. To support this, according to ANA Nursing Resources Hub (2023), ANA (2014) describes that nursing informatics is “the integration of nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice.

With the rise and ever-changing advancements of technology, we inevitably recognize the role of computer technology in the multifaceted diagram of sectoral groups across all human interventions. It is such that technology has continued to infiltrate the world of nursing with the birth of nursing informatics. The radical implementations of these technologies includes reinforcement in nursing studies with the help of technology. In nursing education, we first-handedly experience the benefit of simulation-based learning like web-based or computer simulation, high and low fidelity mannequins, partial-task simulators and the likes (Walsh University Online, 2023). In the nursing practice, nurses employ the use of electronic health records (EHR) like the Computerized Registry of Admissions and Discharges (RADISH) where it accommodates out-patient record-keeping in PGH (PGH, Forward March!, 2022). And lastly, in nursing research where database models like the Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), one of the largest nursing research database aggregates large volumes of nursing research, nursing-patient data outcomes, which has the capability to analyze trends, outcomes, and patterns in the betterment of patient care (EBSCO, n.d.).

Applications
Nursing practice - According to study of De Gagne et al. (2012), there has been increasing popularity in the nursing practice in the use of barcode scanner drug distribution devices, portal medical devices, electronic health records (EHRs), and automatic patient data collection, including vital sign monitoring. All of which are the results of merging nursing informatics and practice.

Nursing Research - Nursing informatics (NI)could lead the forefront in increasing the body of knowledge on epigenetics. The field of epigenetics studies how environmental factors and behavior can modify the genetic makeup (CDC, 2024). NI allows the formation of a large pool of data which may be specialized for genetic testing and all aspects of health of patients. This intertwining of both NI and epigenetics research will lead to the discovery of patterns in genome in a more population-based context. Essentially the knowledge from this would translate into the best possible environmental factors and behaviors that support patient outcomes (Milner & Zadinsky, 2022).

Nursing Education - From the surface, we already know that technology increases our access to information. In the BS Nursing curriculum, the application of nursing informatics can enhance the digital literacy of students in both educational learning within the university and in the clinical setting. Application of nursing informatics in learning introduces technological advancements that can support the depth of learning of students. Morever, NI will help students in prepartion of the various health record systems in hospitals (Harerimana et al., 2022).

In the field of nursing education, informatics is helping to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice. A notable example is the use of simulated learning environments and virtual patient care systems in nursing schools across the Philippines. Nursing schools have incorporated informatics into their curricula to equip students with the necessary skills to navigate and utilize electronic health records (EHRs) and other digital tools. In clinical practice, nursing informatics has been vital in improving patient care through better data management and real-time decision-making tools. One prominent example is the PhilHealth Electronic Claims System (eClaims), which allows nurses and healthcare providers to manage patient data, submit claims, and monitor health services efficiently. Nurses play a critical role in documenting patient information and ensuring that data entered into these systems is accurate and up to date. In nursing research, informatics plays a crucial role in managing and analyzing data to inform evidence-based practice. One example is the Philippine Health Information Exchange (PHIE), a platform that facilitates the sharing of health data among healthcare providers and researchers. By providing access to large datasets, PHIE allows nurse researchers to study trends in population health, such as the incidence of non-communicable diseases or the mental health challenges facing specific communities.

From enhancing nursing students' preparedness through simulated learning to streamlining clinical workflows with electronic health systems and enabling data-driven research, informatics is reshaping the nursing profession. As healthcare continues to evolve, the integration of informatics into nursing practice will become even more critical in delivering quality care and improving health outcomes in the Philippines.

In today's generation, nursing informatics has become an essential tool in nursing education. The integration of clinical simulation has significantly enhanced student nurses' ability to develop critical clinical and thinking skills, ultimately leading to safer patient care. Simulations provide students with a realistic hospital setting, allowing them to gain valuable healthcare and nursing experience prior to entering the professional workforce. The UP College of Nursing effectively utilizes various simulators, such as SAM for auscultation practice and Lucina for labor and delivery scenarios, to provide students with valuable hands-on experience.

Integrating technology in the nursing practice has made the work of professionals in different healthcare institutions more efficient and effective. Electronic medical records (EMRs) such as the Registry of Admission and Discharges (RADISH) offer healthcare teams immediate access to complete patient information, leading to more informed clinical judgments. Healthcare professionals can immediately review a patient's medical history, allergies, medications, and diagnostic findings. By enhancing access to patient data, EMRs can improve patient safety and reduce the likelihood of medical errors.

Technological advancements have revolutionized nursing research by providing researchers with access to credible articles and studies from diverse databases. These digital platforms, such as PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar, offer vast repositories of scholarly literature, enabling researchers to efficiently locate relevant information and stay updated on the latest developments in their field.

Along with the advancement of technology comes its integration into various fields, including nursing, which has transformed how care is delivered, taught, and researched. In nursing education, nursing informatics is applied through the use of simulation software and virtual learning environments (VLE) that have provided significant advantages for both faculty and students by enhancing interactive learning experiences and improving clinical decision-making skills.
In clinical practice, the days of updating paper charts with handwritten notes are over due to the adoption of electronic medical records (EMRs) by healthcare institutions. Setting up appointments at hospitals or healthcare centers has also become more convenient through online registration and appointment systems. Furthermore, the introduction of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) allows healthcare providers to enter medical orders electronically.
Lastly, nursing informatics plays a vital role in nursing research, where it is used for data analysis that enables researchers to mine large datasets and uncover patterns that inform evidence-based practices. By using these tools, systematic reviews and meta-analyses become much more efficient, allowing nurses to quickly access the best available evidence, apply it in real-world settings, and thus improve patient outcomes.

There are several ways that nursing education can use nursing informatics. This comprises the virtual learning platforms that are utilized to impart teachings relevant to the practice of nursing and to disseminate educational videos that will help student nurses acquire various skills and interventions. In addition, virtual clinical and lab simulations prior to our actual clinical duty help us enhance our skills and provide better care for patients.

When it comes to nursing practice, where work is often information-intensive, the EMR—which is utilized for patient history reviews, documentation, and communication with other medical professionals—is a well-known application of nursing informatics in clinical practice. This reduces medical errors, which is important for patient safety. Monitoring devices that keep tabs on patient status, laboratory results, and vital signs are one example of a specific application. Medical personnel can save more lives by acting more quickly because of the prompts and alerts that activate if unusual changes are detected.

Meanwhile, research databases like CINAHL, which provide researchers with a vast array of nursing and health-related literature and make it easy for them to filter out studies based on their defined criteria, are examples of how nursing informatics is being applied in nursing research.

In nursing education, learning management systems like Canvas and VLE which are widely used by universities and colleges including our own College of Nursing are examples of the application of nursing informatics. These platforms allow professors to easily share and make learning materials accessible to students. I believe these systems benefit us as nursing students by providing access to the information we need to develop the knowledge and skills that will be essential for our practice in the future.

In nursing practice, an example is the RADISH system of the UP-PGH which stands for the Computerized Registry of Admissions and Discharges that we observe during our clinical duties used by healthcare professionals such as nurses. This system makes it easier for the healthcare team, especially nurses, to record and access the information of their patients thereby improving collaboration among other healthcare team members for the continuity of patient care.

In nursing research, an example of its application is a study conducted by Aleandri, Scalorbi, and Pirazzini in Italy, titled “Electronic nursing care plans through the use of NANDA, NOC, and NIC taxonomies in community setting: A descriptive study in northern Italy.” In their research, they used a software called “Casa della Salute” to manage nursing documentation such as the nursing diagnosis and interventions for patients (Aleandri, Scalorbi, & Pizzarini, 2021). The software helped them to collect and analyze the data they were studying for.

Nursing informatics can be manifested as virtual learning systems in nursing education. During the pandemic, student nurses became familiar with virtual simulation. Through that program, student nurses were able to take care of a virtual patient to practice clinical rotation skills. It was a great effort that enabled student nurses to review skills and acquaint themselves with hospital work in a risk-free but engaging way. Aside from the pandemic, these virtual learning systems are very useful in helping nursing students access education despite challenging circumstances.

For nursing practice, NI can be observed in the way hospitals handle patient information. During our clinical rotations last academic year, the nurses showed us the OCRA and RADISH systems, that really served as the organizational lifeblood of the hospital. Aside from that, different wards had their own unique digital patient handling systems, particularly for handling queues and appointments.

For nursing research, I can imagine that NI’s applications can be similar to other researches when handling both qualitative and quantitative data. It is imperative that the data collection system is well adjusted to the goals of the research. For nursing research, it is likely that health-related factors will always be considered, and patterns will be easier to see when the data is well-organized. That can be attained by NI.
