In nursing education, informatics is essential for managing and delivering educational experiences. For instance, many nursing programs now incorporate simulation-based learning environments that use informatics technologies to create realistic clinical scenarios. These simulations help nursing students develop critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills by interacting with electronic health records (EHRs), computerized provider order entry (CPOE) systems, and other digital tools they will encounter in practice. This integration of technology ensures that future nurses are prepared for the digital healthcare environment.
In nursing practice, informatics is applied in several ways to enhance patient care. One example is the use of computerized provider order entry (CPOE), which allows healthcare providers to enter medical orders electronically. Nurses use this system to access accurate, up-to-date patient information quickly, improving workflow efficiency and communication among the healthcare team. This technology significantly reduces errors and ensures timely patient care, directly influencing patient outcomes.
In nursing research, informatics enables the collection and analysis of large amounts of health data, which can be used to identify trends, improve patient care, and support evidence-based practice. Machine learning, a form of artificial intelligence, helps analyze this data, identifying patterns that might not be immediately evident to researchers. These insights can then guide clinical guidelines and best practices, improving care delivery across healthcare settings.

In nursing education, clinical simulations have greatly contributed to equipping nurses with the competencies to handle patients that are well or ill. Various institutions in the Philippines now incorporate the use of softwares and mannequins to make the learning process more in-depth. In the case of UP College of Nursing, Bates’ Visual Guide is provided as a visual instructional tool to students to guide them in physical examination and mastering necessary skills needed in the clinical area. More so, mannequins like Sam and Lucina have also been incorporated in the process of learning, which provided students with hands-on experience through mimicking a realistic environment and a specific condition of a patient. Therefore, bridging the gap between theory and clinicals.
As for nursing practice, traditional methods of the delivery of healthcare have now been made effective and efficient through the use of technology. As seen in the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), the use of electronic health records have now been established (i.e. RADISH and OCRA). The use of such platforms have improved the documentation of patient information, minimized medical errors, and enhanced the overall quality of patient health outcomes. All the more, PGH now practices telemedicine which expands a patient’s access to healthcare.
Ultimately, in nursing research, databases such as Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and OpenAthens have also been granted to students of the University of the Philippines Manila to have easy access to medical-related journals and articles, in which most of the up-to-date findings can be found.

Whereas in nursing practice, informatics improves patient care and outcomes. Examples include electronic health records (EHRs), computerized provider order entry (CPOE) systems, and clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) to enhance patient safety and quality of care. Additionally, informatics is used in care coordination, patient engagement, and population health management. Like in PGH, informatics allows nurses to access patient portals that provide medical records, doctor’s orders, and test results with a click.
Finally, informatics analyzes large datasets in nursing research, identifies trends and patterns, and develops predictive models to improve healthcare outcomes. For example, researchers can use machine learning algorithms to analyze EHR data and identify high-risk patients for targeted interventions. We also learn in our statistics and probability classes that using different methodologies and formulas can all be done using different statistical sites, allowing a more accurate representation of results and lesser chances of errors.

In nursing education, using visual guides, such as Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination, has helped a lot in the discipline. The Bates’ Visual Guide was a nursing informatics tool that provides data and improves the education of student nurses. Incorporating the data online was not new to us since we came from a 2-year online class during our Senior High School. With that, we were able to adapt well to the system of online learning.
Meanwhile, the Electronic Health Records under the nursing practice helps in identifying, collecting, processing, and managing data and information. During the OPD-ObGyne rotation we did during our N13 clinical duty, we were able to view the EHR of the ward. PGH also used the Computerized Registry of Admissions and Discharges Information Management Systems (RADISH) to store patient information. This includes the health history, doctors’ orders, nursing interventions, and other notes that healthcare providers should be aware of. I was able to understand how nursing informatics helps a lot in organizing and making a system within the ward for a better quality of care that each patient deserves.
For nursing research, people now use online platforms to conduct their research. Though with the problems regarding security and privacy of the people, nursing research has been proactive in making it a safe space for everyone to respond to. Forms were answered so that different disciplines under the nursing research would be able to improve and focus their care on the patient’s well-being.

Nursing informatics paved the way for an advanced nursing education. From a traditional mode of learning, where students had to access different kinds of printed textbooks and materials to learn, we now have digital sources where nursing students can access everything they need for their education with just a single tap or click. One application of nursing informatics that has impacted my education is our college's high-fidelity mannequins. SAM and LUCINA are two of our college's high-fidelity mannequins that can perform human body functions. SAM allowed me to practice my skills in auscultation and differentiating different breath and heart sounds. On the other hand, LUCINA allowed me to perform the whole process of delivering a baby, which helped me a lot when I was completing my delivery room cases. These innovations elevate our skills as student nurses and better prepare us for what we will encounter in the clinical setting (Solnick & Weiss, 2007).
On the other hand, nursing informatics has helped nursing practice by ensuring that every medication is thoroughly checked and administered. Through the electronic medication administration record, nurses can keep track of the medicines taken by every patient and make sure that the correct dose is given at the right time (Benson, 2024). In PGH, the e-MAR is part of RADISH, wherein nurses can easily update patients' medication records and share them with other healthcare team members.
The impact of nursing informatics is also evident in nursing research since it has made research journals accessible to the public. Journals like CINAHL can now be accessed anytime, which makes it a lot easier for us student nurses to browse through breakthroughs and current updates in the nursing field (Witherspoon, 2014). It also allows us to see research gaps and conduct studies to address those.

To make the use of nursing informatics in our profession more tangible, two examples of its application in the field of nursing education and nursing practice are the use of simulation-based learning and electronic health records, both of which are commonly implemented in different nursing institutions in the country. Like our practice in UPCN, virtual and mannequin-based simulations are used to practice laboratory skills in preparation for the actual procedures that would be done once students are assigned to the bedside in the teaching hospitals. These simulations mimic actual medical situations or procedures to let students practice skills in a safe and controlled environment with the guidance of their clinical instructors. In addition to this, simulation through electronic health records enables the students to practice documenting patient care and procedures, which is a crucial part of patient care when it comes to clinical duties and rotations.

Through nursing informatics, technology has been accentuating the efficiency of nursing education (INSCOL, 2023). The American Nurse Journal as cited by Cpatete (2024), has discussed the integration of simulation technology in classrooms to create a learning environment that focuses on students’ critical thinking and fosters a stronger relationship between the students’ theoretical abilities and the practical setting. This exemplifies the impact of nursing informatics on education where education is enhanced through technology and accessibility in order to upgrade the competencies of student nurses.
Going beyond the classroom, nursing informatics has also proven its role in the nursing practice as there are various innovations created that we utilize in providing patient-centered care. For instance, the transition from paper-based health records to centralized electronic health records has increased the efficiency of nursing practice, reduced its cost, and enhanced the lives of patients (American Nurse, 2023). Another application would be the innovation of telemedicine and teleconsultation, where health services provided became more accessible through the use of telehealth technologies. With this, remote monitoring, health education, and medical consultation have been brought to the homes of the people, especially in remote areas (Chu et al., 2021).
Lastly, nursing informatics also advances medical research where evidence-based practices are discovered and analyzed (Carlow University Online, 2022). Through nursing informatics, patient data from different platforms could be synthesized, interpreted, and analyzed to study different healthcare delivery methodologies, which impacts the nursing field holistically. Moreover, this also overlaps with nursing education and nursing practice as the data would yield information that would be necessary for substantial clinical decision-making for patient welfare Cpatete (2024b).

In nursing education, nursing informatics facilitates the learning and teaching during classroom sessions or skills lab activities (Harerimana et al., 2022). This could be through the different tools they use or the different methods they would utilize in delivering nursing education to their students.
In the nursing ractice, EHRs are being utilized in patient care, which is one of the tools that nursing informatics was able to provide to make it more efficient and safe for the nurses to provide care to their patients. It integrates the knowledge of the nurse with tools and technology to aid in their practice. According to ANA Nursing Resources Hub (2023), ANA (2013) describes that “this data approach to patient care enhances the clinical experience for health care providers and patients.”
Lastly for research, same with the rest, this deals with data that needs tools for them to be organized and used efficiently. Nursing informatics help with processing that data and draw conclusions and information from that data, which are valuable and important in the improvement of the nursing practice. To support this, according to ANA Nursing Resources Hub (2023), ANA (2014) describes that nursing informatics is “the integration of nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice.

Nursing practice - According to study of De Gagne et al. (2012), there has been increasing popularity in the nursing practice in the use of barcode scanner drug distribution devices, portal medical devices, electronic health records (EHRs), and automatic patient data collection, including vital sign monitoring. All of which are the results of merging nursing informatics and practice.
Nursing Research - Nursing informatics (NI)could lead the forefront in increasing the body of knowledge on epigenetics. The field of epigenetics studies how environmental factors and behavior can modify the genetic makeup (CDC, 2024). NI allows the formation of a large pool of data which may be specialized for genetic testing and all aspects of health of patients. This intertwining of both NI and epigenetics research will lead to the discovery of patterns in genome in a more population-based context. Essentially the knowledge from this would translate into the best possible environmental factors and behaviors that support patient outcomes (Milner & Zadinsky, 2022).
Nursing Education - From the surface, we already know that technology increases our access to information. In the BS Nursing curriculum, the application of nursing informatics can enhance the digital literacy of students in both educational learning within the university and in the clinical setting. Application of nursing informatics in learning introduces technological advancements that can support the depth of learning of students. Morever, NI will help students in prepartion of the various health record systems in hospitals (Harerimana et al., 2022).

Integrating technology in the nursing practice has made the work of professionals in different healthcare institutions more efficient and effective. Electronic medical records (EMRs) such as the Registry of Admission and Discharges (RADISH) offer healthcare teams immediate access to complete patient information, leading to more informed clinical judgments. Healthcare professionals can immediately review a patient's medical history, allergies, medications, and diagnostic findings. By enhancing access to patient data, EMRs can improve patient safety and reduce the likelihood of medical errors.
Technological advancements have revolutionized nursing research by providing researchers with access to credible articles and studies from diverse databases. These digital platforms, such as PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar, offer vast repositories of scholarly literature, enabling researchers to efficiently locate relevant information and stay updated on the latest developments in their field.

The application of nursing informatics is highlighted especially during nursing practice, where patient information is crucial for clinical decision-making. At PGH, practical examples include the use of tools like OCRA, RADISH, and online databases during triage. As nursing students, part of our training involves becoming proficient with these tools used in everyday practice. In addition, nursing informatics plays a role in formulating and programming simulations that help develop our nursing skills. Later, as nursing students transition into researchers, nursing informatics can be used to facilitate the analysis of large datasets, incorporating data management strategies, and identifying trends to drive practical improvements in patient care.

In clinical practice, the days of updating paper charts with handwritten notes are over due to the adoption of electronic medical records (EMRs) by healthcare institutions. Setting up appointments at hospitals or healthcare centers has also become more convenient through online registration and appointment systems. Furthermore, the introduction of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) allows healthcare providers to enter medical orders electronically.
Lastly, nursing informatics plays a vital role in nursing research, where it is used for data analysis that enables researchers to mine large datasets and uncover patterns that inform evidence-based practices. By using these tools, systematic reviews and meta-analyses become much more efficient, allowing nurses to quickly access the best available evidence, apply it in real-world settings, and thus improve patient outcomes.

Re: Examples of applications of NI
When it comes to nursing practice, where work is often information-intensive, the EMR—which is utilized for patient history reviews, documentation, and communication with other medical professionals—is a well-known application of nursing informatics in clinical practice. This reduces medical errors, which is important for patient safety. Monitoring devices that keep tabs on patient status, laboratory results, and vital signs are one example of a specific application. Medical personnel can save more lives by acting more quickly because of the prompts and alerts that activate if unusual changes are detected.
Meanwhile, research databases like CINAHL, which provide researchers with a vast array of nursing and health-related literature and make it easy for them to filter out studies based on their defined criteria, are examples of how nursing informatics is being applied in nursing research.

In nursing education, learning management systems like Canvas and VLE which are widely used by universities and colleges including our own College of Nursing are examples of the application of nursing informatics. These platforms allow professors to easily share and make learning materials accessible to students. I believe these systems benefit us as nursing students by providing access to the information we need to develop the knowledge and skills that will be essential for our practice in the future.
In nursing practice, an example is the RADISH system of the UP-PGH which stands for the Computerized Registry of Admissions and Discharges that we observe during our clinical duties used by healthcare professionals such as nurses. This system makes it easier for the healthcare team, especially nurses, to record and access the information of their patients thereby improving collaboration among other healthcare team members for the continuity of patient care.
In nursing research, an example of its application is a study conducted by Aleandri, Scalorbi, and Pirazzini in Italy, titled “Electronic nursing care plans through the use of NANDA, NOC, and NIC taxonomies in community setting: A descriptive study in northern Italy.” In their research, they used a software called “Casa della Salute” to manage nursing documentation such as the nursing diagnosis and interventions for patients (Aleandri, Scalorbi, & Pizzarini, 2021). The software helped them to collect and analyze the data they were studying for.

For nursing practice, NI can be observed in the way hospitals handle patient information. During our clinical rotations last academic year, the nurses showed us the OCRA and RADISH systems, that really served as the organizational lifeblood of the hospital. Aside from that, different wards had their own unique digital patient handling systems, particularly for handling queues and appointments.
For nursing research, I can imagine that NI’s applications can be similar to other researches when handling both qualitative and quantitative data. It is imperative that the data collection system is well adjusted to the goals of the research. For nursing research, it is likely that health-related factors will always be considered, and patterns will be easier to see when the data is well-organized. That can be attained by NI.
