Reflecting on the lesson

Choose one concept in our lesson today, give a brief explanation about the concept and cite how would you apply this learning in your everyday life.

Active immunity, also the pathogen resistance, is the result of the immune system creating antibodies in response to an illness. The synthesis of antibodies in reaction to an antigen is also referred to as this. Artificial active immunity is one kind of this immunity, with vaccinations and toxoids being two well-known examples.

In retrospect, the Dengvaxia controversy impacted most Filipino people’s perceptions towards immunization, as seen in the rampant COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. During our SOCIO 101 class last year (in my previous program), we went to Banaue for our fieldwork. Our group focused on health and medicine, so we interviewed the Banaue locals regarding the current state of health in their area, particularly with regard to immunizations. One official told us that most of the people in their barangay refused to be vaccinated against COVID-19 primarily because of what had transpired at the Dengvaxia immunization in 2016 due to the government’s failure.

With this, as a nursing student, health promotion is a vital aspect of my career path. Health education is highly crucial, especially in communities that have little or no access to information and resources about the importance of vaccines in decreasing the risks of acquiring diseases. Through vaccination, our immune system actively responds; thus protecting our body from life-threatening illnesses and aiding us in living a healthier and longer life.
