Inflammation is one of the body’s innate defense mechanisms. In the previous activity, I have expounded on the three basic stages of inflammatory response: (1) vasodilation and increased permeability of blood vessels, (2) emigration of phagocytes, and (3) tissue repair. During most inflammatory responses, pus formation occurs and continues until the infection subsides. Pus is a collection of dead cells (phagocytes and tissue cells) and fluid.  If pus cannot drain out of an inflamed region, an abscess (excessive accumulation of pus in a confined space) develops. Common instances include pimples and boils.
