The sound of the alarm ringing stimulates the sensory receptors in the ears. This information is relayed to the central nervous system (CNS) which processes the input and initiates the waking response. The autonomic nervous system, particularly the parasympathetic branch, then stimulates the act of stretching and yawning, indicating recovery after sleeping. The smell of the coffee brewing then stimulates the sensory receptors in the nose which relay this information to the CNS. The CNS then decides that you crave coffee. The stimulus then again triggers the parasympathetic branch of the ANS to urge the salivary glands to produce saliva. Simultaneously, the stimulus also triggers the ENS to influence stomach rumbling.
