I cannot answer if a good clinical teacher, since I haven’t been teaching yet in a formal setting. However this question made me reflect deeply on the roles of a clinical teacher.

Being a good clinical teacher requires a combination of complex roles all aiming to produce well-prepared students. I should be clinically competent with a strong grasp of the subject matter and clinical skills relevant to my field, as students look up to us as role models. I should also be able to convey complex medical concepts in a clear and understandable manner which is vital for promoting a positive learning environment. As we often hear, “mahirap na nga, lalo pa pinapahirap”. Additionally, be able to understand the challenges that learners may face and be patient with their progress. Its not like, “dapat alam nyo na to pag pasok nyo”. We were once students ourselves,  and I appreciate the guidance and patience that my teachers showed me. I should also be more approachable to students for them to feel comfortable seeking guidance.

I recognize the attributes that I need to develop more.  I should stay updated with the latest advancements and integrate innovative teaching techniques to engage students and promote active learning experiences. I should also be able to balance my clinical responsibilities with teaching, which is quite challenging. I know that developing effective time management skills can help me fulfill both roles effectively.

True that balancing the clinics with teaching is a challenge. Can it also be the reason/motivation for one another rather than opposite sides of one's life fulcrum?

This is a good question Gisel, about balancing clinical responsibilities, teaching, personal life. I guess it starts with what your passion really is. You’ll have to ask that to yourself. Siempre family life is a given priority. Pero what else would you like to do more outside family life: be a clinician or be a teacher-clinician? Personally I’m motivated to teach because I was motivated by my mentors that teaching is a “divine” profession hahaha. But seriously, i don’t find teaching as work. It’s play for me. And a gratifying one. Kaya heto, dakilang titser pa rin.

Kahit hindi pa po ganun katagal yung time niyo in the formal clinical teacher setting, I’m sure na you have been doing well as a clinical teacher to your juniors din po. Tama po kayo sa “mahirap na nga, pinapahirapan pa” kaya I really appreciated the time na kayo po yung residents namin sa OB rotation back in pgh nung student pa ako, kasi yung batch nyo po weren’t condescending (like other more senior batches 👀) whenever we would come to ask for help, and by that pa lang alam ko po na you have the right attitude in being a good clinical teacher. Experience in the formal setting will come next na lang din po. 💖

I like the attribute of being patient and being a constant guide to your learners. I need to develop that in myself.

With your reflections Mavel, I think you are all set to start your journey as a clinical teacher. I completely agree that technology and time are the two most important elements that we have to be mindful of as teachers

Agree on the tightrope act of balancing clinic, school AND personal life. It’s so hard to find enough time in a day to fit all these roles.

Limavel, you will experience more the complexity of the teacher role if you already engage in formal teaching. And we learn best by experience…Good luck!!
