Common Sites and their Targeted Muscles |

Buttocks |
Gluteus maximus |
Iliac crest, sacrum, coccyx, & aponeurosis of sacrospinalis |
Iliotibial tract of fascia lata and superior lateral part of linea aspera under the greater trochanter of femur |
Extends thigh at hip joint and rotates thigh laterally; helps lock knee extensions |
Lateral side of thigh |
Vastus lateralis |
Greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur |
Patella via quadriceps tendon and then tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament |
All four heads extend leg at knee joint; rectus femoris muscle acting alone also flexes thigh at hip joint |
Shoulder |
Deltoid |
Acromial extremity of the clavicle, acromion of scapula, and spine of scapula |
Deltoid tuberosity of humerus |
Lateral fibers abduct arm at shoulder joint; anterior fibers flex and medially rotate arm at shoulder joint; posterior fibers extend and laterally rotate arm at shoulder joint |
LOCATING THE GLUTEUS MAXIMUS SITE: Place the palm of the hand over the greater trochanter of the femur and orient the index and thumb toward the umbilicus along the anterior iliac spine. Afterwards, make a "V" shape with fingers and position it toward the iliac crest. The center part of the 'V'-shaped fingers is where the injection site is located.
LOCATING THE VASTUS LATERALIS SITE: Palpate the muscle above the knee joint and below the greater trochanter. Afterwards, divide the muscle into three and the injection should be given into the middle third of the muscle, the outer anterolateral aspect, lateral to the center of the thigh.
LOCATING THE DELTOID SITE: By exposing the upper arm and palpating the acromion process, you can detect the landmark for the deltoid muscle, situated 2.5-5 cm below the acromion process. To locate, three fingers must be laid across the deltoid muscle. The site of intramuscular injection lies in the center of the muscle, around 3 fingers beneath.
