1. Platysma

  • Originfascia over deltoid and pectoralis major muscles
  • Insertion: base of mandible; skin of lower face (cheek and lower lip); angle of mouth
  • Actiondepresses mandible, draws outer part of lower lip inferiorly and posteriorly as in pouting

2. Mentalis

  • Origin: body of mandible
  • Insertion: skin of chin
  • Action: protrudes and elevates lower lip allowing pouting face

3. Orbicularis oris

  • Origin: muscle fibers surrounding opening of mouth
  • Insertion: skin at corner of mouth
  • Action: purses lips, puckers lip edges, closes and protrudes lips

4. Corrugator supercilii

  • Origin: medial end of superficial arch of frontal bone, cranially to the root of the nose
  • Insertion: skin above middle part of the eyebrow
  • Action: pulls skin of eyebrow medially and downward, also produces vertical wrinkles in forehead

5. Orbicularis oculi

  • Origin: medial wall of orbit
  • Insertion: circular path around orbit
  • Action: closes eye

6. Occipitofrontalis

  • Origin: epicranial aponeurosis
  • Insertion: skin superior to supraorbital margin
  • Action: draws scalp anteriorly, wrinkles skin of forehead horizontally, raises eyebrows
