I have been a clinical teacher for more than two decades already. I received positive and negative feedback from my students and colleagues as well. As a clinical teacher, I always ensure to meet my students all the time in the clinics to support them as a partner in their learning journey and provide learning opportunities to maximize their learning. I encourage them to ask questions to clarify issues they don’t understand.

There is still a lot to improve in my teaching. This new generation of learners is different from me, and I need to be more patient and understanding of how they learn. Establishing open communication and providing consistent feedback may help us achieve our goals.

Hi Mitzie, yes students nowadays are different, and we have to adjust and somehow narrow the generation gap especially in terms of clinical teaching strategies through constant feedback and open communication. And as I always instill in my mind, our medical students today will be our personal doctors in the future so we have to teach them good.

Hi Mitzy, I totally agree with you that we have to always encourage open communication with our students. Listen more and be sensitive to non-verbal and unspoken signals or cues. We need to be more patient and understanding of their capacity to learn.

HI Doc Mitzy,

I too have received various positive and negative feedbacks, but the things I value the most are the negative ones. The positive feedbacks are just for validation for the positive things I have done, and the negative feedbacks are lessons to be learned and improvements to be made.

Both negative and positive feedback from our colleagues and students helps us improve our craft as clinical teachers. We must embrace them constructively.
