I can say that I am not that bad of a clinical teacher. I bring along with me enough years (17-18 years of being a neurologist/psychiatrist) of experience and genuine intention to be of service to patients. I also espouse a democratic learning environment where I allow my students to express themselves, commit mistakes, explore things, and learn from their own experience. I make it a point that they stay curious and continue to yearn for more learning.

I still need to grow more in my practice, learn more from every patient (and from my students), hone my craft to expertise and mastery. I always remind myself to be less critical of students because at times I tend to expect a lot from them. I should always be mindful of what they should know at their level.

Hi Tere! I agree that student-centered learning is more conducive to learning, allowing them to explore and express themselves and showing them that it's okay to make mistakes rather than reprimanding them if they make mistakes. The number of years of clinic experience honed us to be better teachers.

Hi Tere, yes the medical landscape is continuously evolving and so as our students. So for us, teachers, we have to cope up and continuously update, polish and fine tune our clinical teaching skills and competence.

Hi Doc Tere,

Allowing students to express themselves and commit mistakes are indeed essential to learning, and our feedback is important in this process. Giving feedback in the correct situation and timing helps in the learning process as it either reinforces skills, or reprimands unwanted behaviors.

Hi doc Tere! I see one good attribute of a good teacher in you...You are able to reflect. Reflection is one way to check and correct ourselves. I admire the humility that despite the years of teaching, you still know that you still have a lot to improve.
