The lesson that resonated with me is that the sites of immune responses often indicate structures involved in clonal selection. In high school, I often experienced some pain around my throat, and tonsillitis was my most common diagnosis. One of the first symptoms of tonsillitis that I became familiar with is the production of a white and soft clump on my soft palatine. From Tortora’s book, tonsillitis involves the inflammation of the palatine tonsils. The inflammation indicates the clonal selection of the adaptive immune system. It is interesting to figure out how body symptoms and body systems correlate. Next time I am diagnosed with a disease caused by a microbe, hopefully not. I will be aware of the possible inflammation sites in my body and hopefully avoid activities that irritate them.
