Our body's "sewerage system" is the lymphatic system. By eliminating any fluids that leak out of our blood vessels, it keeps the fluid balance in our bodily tissues. For both our innate immunity and acquired immunity to work as best they can, the lymphatic system is crucial. Cortisol, a hormone that combats stress, is released when we are under stress, which causes metabolic acidosis. Due to its acidic nature, cortisol can damage lymphoid tissue and obstruct lymphatic movement. As a result, persistent physical activity can lower heart rate by affecting how the body reacts to exercise: a larger stroke volume causes a reduced stress response and consequently less cortisol to be produced, which promotes a more homeostatic environment for the lymphatic system. This serves as a reminder to me to exercise more frequently in order to maintain my health.
