This is Hidilyn Diaz. She won the Philippines’ first-ever Olympic gold medal in the clean and jerk weightlifting category for the 55-kg weight division during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Give 5 examples of muscles with isotonic contractions and 5 examples of muscles with isometric contractions during the activity in the gif below.

In isotonic contractions, the tensionin the muscle remains almost constant while the muscle changes its length. In the gif of Hidilyn Diaz, the following can be considered examples of exhibiting isotonic contractions:

  • Biceps brachii
  • Triceps brachii
  • Gastrocnemius
  • Soleus
  • Rectus femoris

Meanwhile, isometric contractions involve the production of tension that does not exceed the resistance of the object to be moved. As such, the muscle does not change its length. Again, in the gif of Hidilyn Diaz, the following muscles can be seen contracting isometrically:

  • Pectoralis major
  • Rectus abdominis
  • Quadratus lumborum
  • Transversus thoracis
  • Pyramidalis
