To maintain homeostasis in the body, several feedback mechanisms are set in motion when conditions are less than optimal. In the case of thermoregulation, when the body is too hot, the blood vessels dilate and blood flow close to the surface of the skin is increased which aids in heat loss, together with sweating. On the other hand, when the body is too cold blood vessels constrict, and blood flow is moved away from the surface of the skin to conserve body heat. Knowledge of these concepts may be crucial in our daily lives as people from a tropical country. As the summer season starts, cases of heat stroke become rampant, and many are hospitalized due to overheating. Knowing the signs of overheating may save your own life, or somebody else’s in your vicinity.
