Discuss the basic life processes and your own example for each.

BASIC LIFE PROCESSES

  1. METABOLISM

  • sum of all the chemical processes that occur in the body

  • ex. glucose to pyruvate by cellular respiration

  1. RESPONSIVENESS

  • body’s ability to detect and respond to changes or stimulus (stimulus can be external or internal)

  • ex. avoiding towards sources of food and water and away from perceived dangers

  1. MOVEMENT

  • motion of the whole body, individual organs, single cells, and even tiny structures inside cells

  • ex. coordinated movement when dancing

  1. GROWTH

  • increase in body size that results from an increase in the size of existing cells, an increase in the number of cells, or both

  • ex. when cells at the root of the nail grow, the new nail cells push out the old nail cells

  1. DIFFERENTIATION

  • refers to the development of a cell from an unspecialized to a specialized state

  • ex. some cells become skin cells while others become bone, muscle or other specialized cells

  1. REPRODUCTION

  • refers either to the formation of new cells for tissue growth, repair, or replacement, or to the production of a new individual

  • ex. mitosis and meiosis
