Discuss the basic life processes and your own example for each.
BASIC LIFE PROCESSES
-
METABOLISM
-
sum of all the chemical processes that occur in the body
-
ex. glucose to pyruvate by cellular respiration
-
RESPONSIVENESS
-
body’s ability to detect and respond to changes or stimulus (stimulus can be external or internal)
-
ex. avoiding towards sources of food and water and away from perceived dangers
-
MOVEMENT
-
motion of the whole body, individual organs, single cells, and even tiny structures inside cells
-
ex. coordinated movement when dancing
-
GROWTH
-
increase in body size that results from an increase in the size of existing cells, an increase in the number of cells, or both
-
ex. when cells at the root of the nail grow, the new nail cells push out the old nail cells
-
DIFFERENTIATION
-
refers to the development of a cell from an unspecialized to a specialized state
-
ex. some cells become skin cells while others become bone, muscle or other specialized cells
-
REPRODUCTION
-
refers either to the formation of new cells for tissue growth, repair, or replacement, or to the production of a new individual
-
ex. mitosis and meiosis
