The smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in liver cells detoxifies alcohol, while the peroxisomes oxidize toxic substances, one of them being alcohol. Given the situation, when the two liver cells are examined, there would be a difference in the smooth ER and peroxisomes. An increase in smooth ER and peroxisomes would be observed in the liver of my friend as he is an alcoholic. This happens because as the person drinks more alcohol, more enzymes must be produced in order for the alcohol to be detoxified. Hence, more smooth ER and peroxisomes are developed.
