Gene expression in relation to protein synthesis is when the information in the genes is used to make specific proteins. Therefore, when there is transcription (or DNA being transcribed into RNA) and translation (when RNA is translated into amino acids to produce proteins), then we can say that a gene is being expressed; this is because the protein is the product when the information of the genes is interpreted. Just like how genes give genotypic information and it is interpreted or expressed in a phenotypic characteristic.
