Livers help detoxify the alcohol a person consumes. While the liver does this function, liver cells die. As for my friend who consumes alcohol regularly in large amounts, even though the liver can regenerate liver cells, the ability of his liver to regenerate cells will be reduced because of the continuous alcohol intake. Smooth ER and peroxisomes are also affected. For my friend, his alcohol consumption would disrupt the ability of the smooth ER and peroxisomes to detoxify chemicals. As for me who doesn't drink, my liver, liver cells, smooth ER, and peroxisomes are working just fine to perform their ability to detoxify chemicals in my body.
