Every student is required to learn and undergo environmental education in accordance to National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008 or Republic Act No. 9512 which is primarily implemented to promote environmental awareness by educational means. The target population is Filipino youth, especially students of any grade level of either public or private schools. Section 3 stated that other institutions such as "barangay daycare, preschool, non-formal, technical vocational, professional level, indigenous learning and out-of-school youth courses or programs" are also included.
National Environmental Education Foundation listed numerous benefits of environmental education to the young people. Some of these are the following: increase in student engagement and academic achievement, development of confidence to investigate and solve local problems, increase in motivation to improve environmental value of surroundings, and enhancement of positive emotions (mental health).
In Valenzuela (particularly in my high school), environmental education is especially given priority. Every school year, various activities and programs are held to promote environmental awareness. It was commonly managed by the Science clubs -- YES-O and Ecosaver club. Other than these extracurricular activities, environmental issues and youth's responsibility toward nature sustainability are integrated in discussions in moral education, physical science, geography, and other related subjects.
