APPRECIATIVE RESILIENCE IN TIMES OF CRISIS
Emily D. Dicolen, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, NTTCHPABSTRACT
Joan McArthur-Blaire and Jeanie Cockell (2018), authors of the book Building Resilience with Appreciative Inquiry: A Leadership Journey through Hope, Despair, and Forgiveness, define Appreciative Resilience (AR) as the ability to sustain or persevere in the most complex situations and life experiences. AR is that which sustains us as hope blooms, as despair visits, and as forgiveness opens our hearts. Though the authors originally adapted AR in leadership, this can also be adapted in any crisis that an organization and individual encounters. It is grounded on the principles and practices of Appreciative Inquiry (AI).
The three (3) elements of AR which are Despair, Forgiveness, and Hope are states that one goes through during crisis, in this context, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The lecture aims to guide the listeners/participants through in their reflection and documentation of their experiences of despair, forgiveness, and hope during the COVID-19.
Before you watch my video, I encourage you to take some time to share or write your your answers to the following questions:
- What's the BEST thing that ever happened to you during the COVID-19 pandemic?
- How have you used your strength/s to help yourself and others during the OVID times?
- What were your experiences of DESPAIR, FORGIVENESS, and HOPE during the pandemic?
I appreciate your answers. Remember: Sharing is inspiring!!!!

SHARED VOICES OF FILIPINO OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: REFLECTIONS FROM AN ONLINE FORUM
Michael P. Sy, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, NTTCHPDr. Michael Sy is an occupational therapist and Associate Professor at the NTTCHP UP Manila. Michael conducted an online forum, along with his colleagues from the occupational therapy profession, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last April 2020 with the following goals: to elicit OTs' shared voices about the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic to OT practice at present and in the future.
ABSTRACT
This presentation focused on the value of online forums as a remote platform to gather thoughts, ideas, and reflections of people when developing plans, products, and/or processes for practice, education, and policies. His presentation seeks to offer suggestions on how health professions educators can maximize an online forum to develop educational products such as curriculum, training programs, and guidelines for the 'new normal'.
- Have you tried using an online forum to create or plan for an educational product (e.g., module, instructional design, curriculum)? If yes, can you share what was the output of your online forum?
- Have you tried using an online forum during the pandemic within your professional groups? If yes, can you share what purpose(s) the online forum was used for?
- In the coming semester, if you are an HPEducator, do you think you can include an online forum within your syllabus as an instructional strategy? If you think that is possible, which part of your course will an online forum be most likely situated?

Adrian Raul Rabe, MD
MHPEd (candidate)NTTCHP, Honorary Research Fellow, Imperial College LondonABSTRACT
COVID-19 is a pandemic of global impact, in terms of geography and sectors involved. Health professions education (HPEd) has not been spared. ENTRUSTABLE PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES OF HPEd STUDENTS: A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO ASSESSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE
Maria Elizabeth M. Grageda, MHPEd
Assistant Professor , NTTCHPThe shift to outcome-based education in the Philippines has prompted a shift in assessment practices aligned with outcomes, in both classroom and clinical settings where performance of trainees is assessed within real-world environments. The recent health situation prompts us to explore more holistic ways of assessment that can be easily embedded within actual practice settings, such as entrustable professional activities (EPA), which are units of professional practice that can be fully entrusted to a trainee for competent unsupervised activity execution.
1. Do you think the development of EPAs will be helpful in operationalizing and assessing achievement of your own program outcomes? Share your thoughts.
2. How can we ensure a collaborative process in the development and validation of EPAs especially during our current health situation?
3. Offhand, what are some activities that you think can be considered as an EPA for assessment in your own clinical training programs? Are there similar EPAs with that developed in this study for Physical Therapy training?
Online Session 6
