As a counselor, I have not yer witnessed a colleague misusing ChatGPT or AI for research misconduct yet, but I havr thought about how I would most likely handle it if it happened. I would start with an open, honest conversation to understand their perspective—maybe they felt pressured or misunderstood the ethical boundaries of AI use in research. I would gently explain the importance of transparency and properly acknowledging AI in their work, emphasizing how misconduct could affect their credibility and the integrity of their research. My goal would be to guide rather than criticize, helping them understand the broader implications. If the issue couldn’t be resolved informally or if the misconduct was serious, I could endorse the case to the appropriate committee maybe the RPFC or ORI—not to punish but to protect the integrity of the research community and ensure accountability.Ultimately, I believe education is the key. By fostering open discussions about ethical AI use, we can support researchers in navigating these challenges and reduce the temptation to cut corners. It is about creating a culture of integrity and understanding.
