May 2008 na sanggunian. Gaano kahalaga sa pag-aaral? Kung hindi madepensahan, maghanap ng ibang sanggunian.

Good day Prof!

The book by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) ‘Reading Images: The Grammar of Visual Design’ is relevant to my current study as it provides a method on how to approach and analyze visual artworks, including sculptures. It is one of the fundamental resources in social semiotics that tackles how artworks can be analyzed by its contact, distance, and angle, and how the concepts of demand, gaze, and offer can affect the audience’s perception of the work. Additionally, it also discusses how an artwork’s composition and materiality can contain information.

Kress and van Leeuwen have provided important concepts that shall be used in analyzing the sculptures by the artists of Paete. Kress and van Leeuwen’s work complements O’Toole’s (2011) ‘The Language of Displayed Art’ which shall also be used in the visual and semiotic analysis of the sculptures.

In my current study, I shall use both O’Toole and Kress and van Leeuwen as methods under the theoretical framework of social semiotics.

The book also has a more recent edition that was published in 2021 and can be accessed online and through the UPD Engineering Library.

Kress, G. R., & Van Leeuwen, T. (2021). Reading images: The grammar of visual design (Third edition.). Routledge.

I only initially included the second edition of the book as it was the available version at the UPD CAL Library.
