Affected muscles:

  1. Orbicularis oculi - eye closure

  2. Orbicularis oris - mouth closure and protrusion

  3. Platysma - lowering mandible and lower lip

  4. Buccinator - lateral movement of the corners of the mouth

  5. Zygomaticus major - superolateral movement of the corners of the mouth

 

Mechanism of muscle weakness:

  • Facial muscles become temporarily paralyzed due to the inflammation of the 7th cranial nerve (facial nerve), causing loss of strength in these muscles which results in drooping of the face.

 

Other possible symptoms:

  • Difficulty eating or drinking

  • Headache

  • Loss of taste

  • Facial pain or sensitivity
