Muscles Affected Occipitofrontalis Action: Lifts the eyebrow and upper eyelids to create horizontal wrinkles on the forehead. Orbicularis oculi Action: closes the eye. Orbicularis oris Action: closes and extends lips for kissing, presses lips against teeth, and forms lips during talking. Buccinator Action: Draws the corner of the mouth laterally, presses cheeks against the teeth and lips while sucking, blowing, or whistling, and helps in mastication (chewing) by preventing food from getting in the way of the teeth and cheeks. Platysma Action: Draws the outside portion of the lower lip down and to the back, as when pouting; lower jaw is lowered. Mechanism of Muscle Weakness: Damage or illness to the facial (VII) nerve resulting in unilateral paralysis (weakening) of the face expressive muscles.

- Headache
- Tearing
- Drooling
- Loss of the sense of taste on the front 2/3 of the tongue
- Hypersensitivity to sound in the affected ear (hyperacusis)
