Origin: greater trochanter and the lateral lip of the linea aspera of the femur.

Insertion: patella via the quadriceps tendon; patellar ligament to the tibial tuberosity.

Action: extending the knee or straightening the leg at the knee joint.

Locating the Injection Area:

Locate the greater trochanter of the femur, which is the bony prominence on the side of the hip.

Find the kneecap

vastus lateralis is found on the anterior and lateral aspect of the thigh; middle third of the thigh; about 1-2 inches above the knee, and away from the midline of the body.

Origin: Anterior, lateral, posterior fibers

Insertion: deltoid tuberosity of the humerus
