I. Affected Muscles:

  1. Orbicularis Oculi
    Actions:  Closes eye 

  2. Orbicularis Oris
    Actions: Closes and protrudes lips; compresses lips against teeth; and shapes lips during speech

  3. Occipitofrontalis
    Actions: Draws scalp anteriorly, raises eyebrows, and wrinkles skin of forehead horizontally

  4. Buccinator
    Actions: Presses cheeks against teeth and lips; draws corner of mouth laterally; assists in mastication

  5. Platysma
    Actions: Draws outer part of lower lip inferiorly and posteriorly; depresses mandible

II. Mechanism of Muscle Weakness:
Bell’s palsy is a condition in which it causes temporary weakness or paralysis in the facial muscles. This is caused when the facial nerve or 7th cranial nerve is damaged, compressed (due to swelling), or inflamed due to conditions such as viral or bacterial infection, trauma, tumors, and stroke which directly affects the facial muscles.

III. Other Symptoms:

  1. Loss of taste

  2. Decreased Salivation

  3. Loss of ability to close the eyes
