  1. Throwing a baseball overhead
    Muscle Active: Infraspinatus
    Action: Laterally rotates arm at shoulder arm
    Innervation: Suprascapular nerve

    Muscle Active: Biceps brachii
    Action: Flexes forearm at elbow joint, supinates forearm at radioulnar joints, and flexes arm at shoulder joint
    Innervation: Musculocutaneous nerve

 

  1.  Kicking a ball
    Muscle Active: Quadriceps Femoris (Rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius)
    Action: Extend leg at knee joint; Rectus femoris flexes thigh at hip joint
    Innervation: Femoral nerve

    Muscle Active: Gluteus maximus
    Action: Extends thigh at hip joint and laterally rotates thigh; helps lock knee in extension
    Innervation: Inferior gluteal nerve

 

  1.  Doing sit-ups
    Muscle Active: Rectus Abdominis
    Action: Flexes vertebral column, compresses abdomen
    Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves T7 - T12

    Muscle Active: Transverse Abdominis
    Action: Compresses abdomen
    Innervation: Thoracic spinal nerves T8 - T12, iliohypogastric nerve, ilioinguinal nerve

 

  1. Breathing
    Muscle Active: Diaphragm
    Action: Contraction increases vertical dimension of thoracic cavity, resulting in inhalation; Relaxation decreases vertical dimension of thoracic cavity, resulting in exhalation
    Innervation: Phrenic nerve

    Muscle Active: External intercostal
    Action: Contraction elevates ribs and increases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions; relaxation depresses ribs and decreases anteroposterior and lateral dimensions
    Innervation:  Thoracic spinal nerves T2-T12
