1. Platysma
Origin: Fascia covering the superior parts of the pectoralis major and deltoid muscles.
Insertion: Lower border of the mandible and the skin of the lower face.
Action: Tenses the skin of the neck, depresses the mandible, and can also draw down the corners of the mouth.
2. Mentalis
Origin: Incisive fossa of the mandible (below the incisor teeth).
Insertion: Skin of the chin.
Action: Elevates and protrudes the lower lip, wrinkles the skin of the chin (seen in pouting)
3. Orbicular Oris
Origin: Maxilla and mandible (surrounds mouth).
Insertion: Skin and mucous membrane of the lips.
Action: Closes and protrudes the lips (kissing/whistling)
4. Corrugator Supercilii
Origin: Medial superciliary arch of frontal bone.
Insertion: Skin above the middle of the supraorbital margin and bridge of the nose.
Action: Draws the eyebrows downward and medially
5. Orbicularis Oculi
Origin: Medial orbital margin
Insertion: Skin around the margin of the orbit
Action: Closes the eyelid (blink/wink)
6. Occipitofrontalis
Origin: Epicranial aponeurosis
Insertion: Skin of the forehead and eyebrows.
Action: Raises the eyebrows and wrinkles the forehead.
